I'd rather have termites chew my sack off than root for any team to the south:)

IMO it's about ownership in the home team. I feel part of the team because they live where I live. They eat where I go out to eat, etc

It's not really a rule, but it makes it much easier to support the team when they are the hometown team. Plus supporting your local teams usually will help your local economy.

Most players aren't from the area though, and just live there during the season.

I can see the easy and economy part,

But i must say, i catch more hate for being a Packers fan in Ohio then for anything else i say/do.

So how do you pick a team if they aren't your hometown team? Pretty uniforms? 1 player? Whichever team was winning when you first got interested in the sport?

Supporting the hometown team just seems like the least gay way to choosing your team.

True, by while here they are in my home town. If it's a football town like Ann Arbor or columbus, the town becomes their second home.

You grew up in the early to mid 90s, the Packers were the best, therefore you liked the Packers. It happens with lots of kids. Kids are bandwagoners.

Most grow out of if though...

I just cant do it. Ive cheered for the Packers for so long, and there the only team that can actually effect my daily life and routine (thats how i know im a fan...you just cant make this up). Its a curse.

A 18 wins in a row curse :moose:

I most always cheer for the closer team....If nothing else than because my tax dollars helped pay for the venues. (College Sports, I don't care for pro sports for the most part)

I grew up in Central Kentucky as a diehard Reds, Titans, and UK Wildcats fan. Hate baseball now for the most part, still like the Titans but have grown disinterested in the NFL since the influx of new anti contact rules. Still rabid about UK basketball (it literally is a religion for most folks back home).

Moving down to Alabama has got me interested in college football a lot more than before. I root for UK which is a losing cause, but take interest in all the SEC schools due to proximity and love of watching good football.

I follow the good teams in all sports because they are fun to watch, but I literally take UK basketball as if it is an actual part of my life when they win or lose, lol....all part of growing up in the Commonwealth.

I am not a sports fan in any sense of the word. I did however always root for the team my brother hated. He is a big sports fan. It drove him crazy. It didn't help he always picked losers !! I would like to thank the Oakland A's and Pittsburg Pirates... the Raiders and the Steelers for many, many years of torment they let me dish out to my brother !!! Good times !!!! :whip: :D

Why is it a rule to root for the hometown team? I was born in CA, live in MN and support the Steelers.

I can't say I'm much of a fan of any sports though. I can't sit down to watch games as I'd rather be doing something else. If anything, I'm an antagonizer for friends of mine whom support the hometown football team: Vikings. :poke:

    it's not a rule. If it is..... it's stupid:lol:

You're probably right. I like the Yankees, Cowboys, UNC basketball probably because they were winning when I was a kid, grew up watching because my brothers were watching them and they hosted most of the "best players" which is cool to get attached to when you're a kid.

There is a flipside though. I also like Notre Dame football now as much as I did when they were in the national picture. NY Rangers hockey because it was the most available to actually watch on TV when I was a kid.
However you get hooked to a team when youre young, how the heck are you supposed to just stop being interested in them when you're an adult and start likeing a random team from your state that you have zero interest in or may have been rooting against all your life? I should start liking the NY Giants? Dont' think so.

And if I like say the NY Giants, Yankees, syracuse etc.... What do you do if you move to Texas when you're 40 years old?

Yeah, it all starts when you're young. And each town/sports team has different levels of loyalty. You are unlikely to find someone from Massachusetts that isn't a Red Sox fan. Then you have states that don't even have a pro sports team, or states/cities were loyalty to a team is very weak.

I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit. Detroit, despite its struggles over the years, is a very proud city. I don't even like hockey but I am a Redwings fan. Its not a rule, but that is the mentality of fans where I grew up. Everyone I knew that like sports, rooted for Detroit teams...all of them. A large percentage of my family, including aunts, uncles, cousins, etc, have graduated from Michigan. Therefore, I grew up laughing at sparty and hating tOSU. Just how I was raised.

Not sure....but growing up here in NC everyone was in love with UNC basketball, that is a reason I can't stand them. I started pulling against them at an early age just to make people mad.

CFB, I'm a huge UGA fan, it is kinda close and my family lives in georgia.

NFL, I'm a packers fan....but actually it's getting to where there are more teams and players I pull against.

No great ofense to anyone but there isn't a team in the state of Pa I like, at all! And I'm really unsure why? Just dont!
