Alright video guys out there, are these cheap shotgun mics that mount on too of your camcorder (30-90$) worth anything? We are getting our video stuff ready for turkey season on a pretty stiff budget. Just wondering if these will be a better option then just the mic on the camcorder. The camcorder will be a canon vixia hf m30. Thanks for any input.

I'm not sure how well they will work but on guessing it will be an upgrade from the Mic on the video camera. I have the Canon hf r30 and I was looking into a shotgun Mic and I saw one for like 60.

Now im not sure exactly on the reason for one (shotgun Mic ), I mean what is difference when going up in price in these? I'm still learning about this stuff so I don't know much.

They pretty much only pick up sound from the front of the camera. Not much from the side and zero from the back. Not very good at any distance either.

Picking up sound in front of the camera (hence what you're filming) is the whole point JM. :D

The small powered shotgun mics are certainly better than what's built into the camera, but don't expect to be blown away. For $100 I think they're worth the upgrade though. I've got this little AT that I use on my DSLR and it gets the job done.

So long as the camera has a 3.5mm input for an external mic, it will work.

How would you attach it to the camera? I dont think i have a specific spot on my canon hf r30 to put it, but i have a spot where i can plug it into if i wanted a mic.

I was looking at the mic JZ posted, would it be a problem that the camera is set back further on the camera since it is smaller? If i use that mount that bwang posted and the mic it would be sitting back a little ways so i wasnt sure if that would be an issue or not.
