Long story short, I work in a power plant, was a maint mechanic and certified welder for 12 years, They company had a brain fart and forced alot of the lower on the totem pole seniority list mechanics to operations that work swing shifts. The rotating 8 hour schedule sucked, so we voted in a better IMO 12 hour rotating schedule. I have been in that position as an operator slash mechanic for the last 12 years and then it happened The people that were forced under duress are getting ask if they would like to go back to maint, straight days 8 hour hour shift with overtime avalable almost whenever they want it. They wanted 2 guys and I was third in line. One guy turned it down so I jumped on it. Its about 50 cents less an hour but I can make it up easy with pidly OT. No more night shifts and short turn arounds I start Jan 2nd! I will miss the long 8 days off that I got at the end of each rotation but man 7.00 to 3.30 instead of six to six swings is a beautiful thing. No more wearing a radio that never shuts up. I was born with tools and a welder in my hands and I cant wait plus Ill pick up my 5th week of vacation in 2011 peace out,,, Crick
I've only worked a 12 hour swing shift going on for five years now but I've wondered if I'll ever want to work straight 8 hour days like "normal people" do. The long days of work suck but the days off during the week (while everyone else is working) and the 7 day break we get each month is awesome. It is hard on the body mentally and physically though. I know one day I'll have to work straight 8's if I want to progress. Anyway, congrats on the change. I'm sure you'll love it and 8 hour days are gravy (compared to 12). Good luck!
Good for you! I have worked a 12 hour shift for 3 years and previously a rotating 8 hour shift for 2 years. I would hands down keep the 12 hour over the rotating 8 any day of the week. BUT it looks like you got a great 7-3:30pm consistent day schedule so THAT is awesome! The deer are gonna be up CrickCreek come fall.
That's great Crick! I've currently been working 12 hour shifts but might be changing back over to the corporate side of things. I've been asked to become a supervisor at the largest car battery plant in the US. I have some hesitations due to the added responsibilities and headaches but in terms of taking care of my family, it might be worth it.
Thanks people, the last three days at work have been HECTIC, two units down, bringing one up and i have sat down for maby an hour in 3 days on 12 hr days, my feet are killing me and I cant hide from the radio, im looking forward to the change Christine, your always good for a laugh <<<They told me there were not enough openings live to draw, sorry bud but there Miller welders congrats Sanders Hang in there people that are working the swings, I wish you the best and have a happy new year All your post made me smile, Thanks!! peace out,,,,Crick
