I just grabbed a new Stihl Farm Boss for cutting log length lumber down to firewood size. Anyone have any alternative to Stihl chaps/headgear? With the amount of 'bucking' we're going to be doing, it will definitely be smart to have the proper gear. Right now the hemlet/chaps from Stihl look to total about $150-$175. Just looking for some alternative options before dishing out the cash.
They have Husquvarna safety gear at Lowes, which is good quality and cheaper than the Stihl stuff. I wear steel-toe boots too.
check out bailys supply ..........they usually have good prices on saws , chain, parts ,supplies and safety gear Husqvarna Chainsaws, Outdoor Power Equipment and Tree Care Supplies from Bailey's
NICE!!! I love cutting wood!!! I use a farm boss 290 for clearing land for my field, great saws!! A regular hard hat would be fine. I don't use chaps, never have. biggest safety thing to remember for cutting downed logs.... KEEP YOUR FRONT ARM LOCKED STRAIGHT AT ALL TIMES while cutting... that way if the saw bucks back, it goes AWAY from you. be aware of where your body parts are in relationship to the chain.... let the saw do the work...don't force it! felling trees can be really tricky. study the tree from all angles first before cutting, and don't forget to take the wind in consideration as well. Learn what type of cuts you need for each situation/ tree. do some internet searches and youtube searches start with small trees and work your way up to the big boys. make sure to look for dead branches that could fall on you. RESPECT your saw, don't be afraid of it! have fun!!
Thats a great idea...i was cutting down some trees two years ago and all i was wearing was jeans. I ended up shredding my jeans and also my knee. I was very lucky it wasn't to terribly bad but i have a nasty scar to remind me to be safe. I had to learn how to be safe the hard way so its def worth the cash to be safe.
If you're felling trees make sure not to pinch the blade and get it stuck, especially if you've only got one saw! We almost always carry two if we're felling larger trees, that way if one gets jammed you can relieve the pressure with the other. But if you're just bucking up logs you should be fine with the one. I've never got to my skin, but I've torn up shoes, rubber boots, and the thigh of a pair of double front carharts. Always when I was tired and got sloppy with the blade. Hearing protectors are crucial, they also do a pretty good job deflecting errant limbs from clobbering you if your not wearing a helmet. Stay safe
My father in law owns what is likely the largest saw and outdoor/logging equipment shop in the Adirondacks. They sell a lot of Husqvarna and Swedepro equipment. Whatever you get make sure it's Kevlar.
