I have about 4 bags of water softner salt that i have used with great success over the past 2 years for mineral sites during the summer months. However when it comes census time in the winter, they dont seem as interested. I am considering getting a bag of corn to set out for a few months. Would it be wise to mix corn and salt? Just the corn? Or just try and use the salt again and hope?Thoughts?
I think they prefer carbs in the winter. My deer don't seem to mess with minerals in the winter. Blessings.......Pastorjim
I live in north mo and i buy this from a local feed store, I dig a hole about 4 inches deep 2 foot wide and close to 6 feet long and pour two bags in it and mix with the dirt and then cover it with corn. works really well spring thru summer but deer will not bother with it nov thru spring.http://www.orschelnfarmhome.com/trace-mineral-50lb-bag/ctl16754/cp58396/si5175351/cl1/
While the salt is a great attractant it does more harm than good for the deer. There is a huge difference between a salt lick and a mineral site. I just freshened my mineral sites last week as they have been getting hammered lately again. A good quality mineral will be used year round. That being said what is your objective ? ? Do you want to attract deer to hunt or for pictures or are you interested in bettering the health of your deer ? ?
You can have the best of both worlds with a great attractant that improves the health of your deer. http://forums.bowhunting.com/showthread.php?28285-Christmas-Special!
Deer will definetly eat minerals in the winter and I have found on our lease that they come out of the winter in better shape than before we used minerals in the winter years ago. I do not believe in feeding deer any thing with high salt content. Water is harder to come by this time of the year and I believe that is why they wont eat alot of salt now.
