Actually, I believe that all stemmed from the class action suit filed where parents claimed that McDonalds made their children obese. On the seatbelt issue, too many people were ending up with extensive injuries and losing their insurance and the state had to start paying their medical bills. This law was ALL lobbyists for insurance companies and states. Europe has had seatbelt laws for a lot longer than here in the states and the number of fatalities and major injuries dropped after the laws were instituted. Back in the '80's when I was stationed in Germany, a seatbelt violation ticket from the Polizei came out to around $1,000.00. I never got one of those tickets because I couldn't afford one so I and my family wore our seatbelts. Also, if you don't wear your seatbelt and injure yourself, you a putting a financial burden on your immediate family. There was an accident here that eveyone in the car but the driver were wearing seatbelts. Driver was thrown from the car and then the car rolled over him. His wife and two children had minor injuries and got to see their husband and father laying in the ditch crushed. You have to look past yourself on these issues and take a peek at the bigger picture.
I won't discuss anything to do with gun laws to prevent a google search from becoming fodder for the anti-gun nazis.

That's good cause in NY i have two municipalities as clients that both have ticket quota for cell phone violations as line item on a projected budget. In fact before the law was passed in NY part of the selling points were the revenue split between the local governments and the state, that revenue split was changed several times as an addendum to the law. Sarcasm works best when its rooted in reality so you should come here and meet
these minds before you think it isn't possible.

So the judge strikes down the lawsuit because it is up to the parents. Problem solved.
I'm not saying that one shouldn't weat their seatbelt. Committing suicide is the most selfish act one could make, and I personally believe not wearing my seatblet could be putting my family in that situation. However, I do it because I choose to. The biggest lesson I learned in life when my kids were born is that I was no longer living life for me. Like you said, you have to look past yourself. This is the reason I wear my seatbelt, and I chose in some cases not to answer the phone.
I can't argue with any one of your points. Yes I am giving people too much credit, but I would rather choose to do the right thing, not have a government tell me I have to.

Yep the lawsuit was dismissed, but all the media attention with storylines like "Is McDonalds making our children obese?" had already done it's damage. If any group raises enough stink on a subject, there is usually an new law right on their heels. Or if no new law, someone is coerced into changing their business practices due to the negative press they have already received. If the media thinks they can get better ratings by sensationalizing a story, they will. But due to freedom of the press, they are rarely held accountable.
New laws are rarely aimed at the majority who have common sense, but at the minority and the rest of us have another rule we have to follow.

Ban No.... but handsfree is a good thing, especially with all the voice command phones now. I guess if they ban cell phones they should have to ban CB radios too. LOL That'll piss off a bunch of truckers. I see people all screwed up talking on their cell phones. Really should be hands free minimum.

Problem in Georgia would be the fact that every cop you see would have to get off their cell phone to write someone a ticket for being on theirs...

It seems to me that there are people who can talk on the phone and drive safely at the same time and there are those who can't. I'm sure we have all seen examples of those who can't.

If only those people who can phone and drive safely at the same time did it, there would be no problem. But those who can't are either unaware of their inability or unwilling to acknowledge it. The odds are that some of the people advocating the right to phone and drive are, unfortunately, in that latter group.

Maybe if those who can't would simply cowboy up and admit it, the problem would go away.

As we all know,While the mobile phone brings great conveniences to people, it also raises new challenge on the security of confidential work. In recent years, the wiretap, cheating in examination, medical negligence and gas station explosion with mobile phone occurred and it has aroused great concern of the society. Maybe it's one of the reasons that promoted the appearance of phone jammer. You may be watching a nice movie or enjoying your nap when you get free for sometime. Still you have chances of getting disturbed with your most loved ones and close friend chatting near you on the cell phone. At such hours, if you really care for your free time then you need to buy a cell phone jammer.

Hands free only is the way it should be. I've seen too many people wrapped up in a conversation with a phone stuck in their ear. Most do not pay attention to what's going on around them or coming out of another road. My buddy drove me to the doctors the other day. His wife doesn't like to talk on the phone.... she "HAS" to text on the phone. Several times in our trip their and back she'd text him. He'd be driving and texting at the same time. Twice I believe I saved us from rear ending someone when I yelled, "Look OUT". Text my butt. Hands free, OK... texting... a disaster waiting to happen.
