What are your thoughts on people driving while talking on the cell phone?

Do you personally talk on the phone while driving? Is so, do you use hands free or handheld?

Should it be banned entirely for all drivers?
Should it be hands free use only?
Should the restriction be age dependent? (i.e. must be 18 to use a cell phone while driving)

    or

Should there be no restrictions at all and all drivers need to decide for themselves?

For the sake of conversation please try to avoid the texting while driving discussion. I doubt anyone will defend that and that surely is BIG problem so please debate TALKING on the cell phone only.

Personally I really don't see a problem with it. It's really not that difficult to talk and drive. I hate speaker phone, and I dont' like crap shoved in my ear. I don't see how it's deemed dangerous. You can keep your eyes on the road while speaking just fine. I'm not sure if it's to have two hands on the wheel? If that's the reasoning then that's stupid. How many times while you're driving are 2 hands on the wheel? Can one not pick their nose while driving either?

    It should be sex dependent.

I don't believe talking on the phone while driving should be banned. Maybe for minors, but not for experienced drivers. I do believe that texting should be outlawed though. Texting is much more dangerous in my opinion. I can talk on the phone, and drive. Now people should use common sense and not do it in dangerous traffic, but i don't believe we need to have a law for every little situation, our government is already too intrusive for my likes.

I don't think it should be banned, but many people don't pay attention when they are talking on the phone. Happens all the time. Someone is driving like an idiot, you catch or pass them, and they are on the phone yapping away. For some reason people zone out when they are on the phone (not just while driving). Its much worse when driving in a populated area where drivers need to pay more attention (read: more traffic, pedestrians, traffic stops, etc).

If they made it illegal for women and teenagers, I would not shed a tear.

Texting while driving is illegal in Michigan.

I'm a little suprised so far. Interesting.

I thought at least 50% were going to take this stance.

But I do agree with what you guys have said so far. No ban IMO. Perhaps a ban until they are 18.

If they outlaw phones and texting while driving I say outlaw women in the passenger seat...nothing more distracting then that for several reasons ... Fill in the blanks

Never ever, I mean Ever use a cell phone to speak to someone while driving. You could kill someone.

Sent from my Droid while driving eastbound on Interstate 80 at 90 mph.

I have an hour drive each way. I hit county roads, state roads, and interstate. Have I talked on my phone while I drove, well yeah. Did I ever endagner anyone while doing it, nope. When the roads were terrible and i needed both hands and full concentration did I answer the phone when it rang, well no! It's called judgement and responsibility. I know if I text and run off the road and die, it's my fault. That is called a consequence. If I text and drive and kill someone, that is called manslaughter, and I go to jail for life. That is called a consequence. That said, I am able to judge my actions vs. my consequences. Therefore, I don't answer the phone in some situations. Even back when i was a 16 year old idiot, I still knew this.
No there should not be laws against it. It's called consequences to actions. I do not want laws protecting me from my own actions.

You may not, but 90% of people do. You are giving people way too much credit.

    1. You may not have ever endangered someone else that you know of. People that are pre-occupied with something other than driving, whether it be talking on a phone; putting on makeup; or eating a bowl of what I think was cereal, rarely realize it when they run someone off the road.
    2. Too many people lack judgement.
    3. You fail to consider that not only have you taken someone else away from their family for eternity, but you have removed yourself from your family for how ever long your sentence may be.
    4. The laws are not to protect YOU from YOUR own actions, they are to protect others from your actions.

A few things to think about.

It is illegal to use a phone at all in Manhattan, unless you have a bluetooth thing. The thing that causes problems are the college girls that gossip on the phone and don't pay attention to anything else.

JMO Enforce the current laws... If someone is driving wreckless, speeding, changing lanes, whatever... write them a ticket for the violation at hand. If someone can talk and drive without violating the current traffic laws, then leave them alone.

Using a handheld cell phones is banned in Chicago. So now there are no more car accidents in Chicago.

Texting while driving is banned in the whole state. No accidents in the rest of the state either.

Kinda like our draconian gun laws are the reason that nobody gets killed by firearms in IL.

I completely understand every point you made and they're all very valid. However, how far are you planning on taking this then? At what point it is too much? At mcdonalds you have to ask for french fries in your kid's happy meal, if not you get apple slices. This wasn't done as a cost savings, it was done to protect kids from their parents, protect kids from their parents!!!!. My government isn't there to protect my child from me. As a parent, I will do what's best. Is that acceptable for them to do that? Then what?

I get that the law is made to protect me from somone else's mistakes, however, at the same time it's taking away my freedom to make my own decision. Same can be made for seat belts. If I don't wear it, who am I hurting? Myself. So laws are being made to protect me from me??? So does that mean they can get rid of all firearms on the justification that I could shoot myself, sounds outrageous, but that's the direction we're heading.

I'm not trying to be overly political. This is something very small, but at the same time it's slowly removing our decision making.
