I have a few arrows that have been scratched/scuffed. so that one or two layers of the carbon is damaged, not cracked just a layer or so skinned off. are these arrows still useable? i have heard of arrows being cracked and the shooter not noticing, then the arrow shatters when it is shot, sending carbon fragments into his arm, ever since hearing that i am paranoid and cant decide, how damaged i should let my arrows get before i quit using them. obviously any sort of crack is a no go, but i wasn't sure about a little skinning of the outside layer, in a 1 inch spot. hate to throw them away if they are still usable (safely that is)
Honestly, the chances that anything bad will happen is pretty slim... but it's not necessarily a chance I'd be willing to take. I'd be much more apt to shoot an arrow that was slightly cracked at the point end than I would one that has a weak spot in the arrow wall.
I don't shoot the same spots, and try not to use one I have shot thru a deer, hog or bear. Not sure I no how to post a pic but if I can get it up, it will make folks be more carful. I will see what I can do. Well I don't have a clue how, if someone will post it, shoot me a e-mail and I do no how to e-mail to someone, and they can post it up
It's a judgement call. Flex it and roll it real hard right at that point. If it makes noise, junk it.
ok, thanks fr the replies, looks like ill just have to make a judgement call, there really isnt a proven line the arrow has to cross to make it unusable. i just hate throwing away arrows, when they are so expensive.
I've used carbons for a number of years and have shot repeatedly arrows that I have shot thru deer. BUT make sure that there are no layers missing from it. Run your thumb nail across it to feel for any ridges, if so dump it. Scuffs no problem. Bend to hear if it creaks, if it does, adios. I think a trip to the hospital, the pain of having carbon splinters taken out of your hand, losing shooting time or worse huntin time is worth more than $10-15.
I use damaged carbon arrows pretty much right up until they fly funny. -but- I also shoot slightly over-spined arrows and only 40lbs draw weight. ....and I have been known to run with scissors. Arrows do occasionally blow up at the shot. I've seen it at the range. Never seen an injury from it, but it's not good for the bow and it scares the crap outta everyone on the line.
yeah i think i will junk them, just to be safe. i got a tiny splinter in my finger from one removing it from the target (how i figured out it was damaged) and it is the most painful/annoying splinter i have ever had, and there isnt a good way to get it out.
Can you imagine how bad a bunch of them piercing your hand would feel? I try to flex mine every few sets then after I am done for the day I always check them out. I have a couple in the closet now because of that.
guess ill start looking for something creative to do with the damaged arrows. maybe think of some way to use them to decorate something, who knows. or they may just go to the trash.
