Well today in the thumb of michigan the wind is coming out of the west at 20 mph with gust 30mph+ and I am directly down wind! So with my ameristep dog house ground blind and me in my jeans and winter jacket said what the hell. I spayed down with scent killer and took 2oz of vanilla extract sprinkled it in front of my blind and sat back. Watch 4 doe come in and eat for about 20 minutes!!!!!! So why should I buy the scent blocking clothes??????????
I dont think its a matter of should but a matter of want. Alot of guys want scent blocking gear to put the odds a little more in their favor. That doesnt mean you cant see them without it BUT the odds are less. The Vanilla extract might not have been needed but that too puts the odds in your favor. Even your ground blind wasnt needed but that too raised your odds. When I go out I do everything possible to be successful.
If you play the wind right you really don't need it. But the weather doesn't always cooperate and if it shifts...you may wish you had it! Not saying that it works 100% but I think it definitely helps! Like Kyle said...it helps increase your odds!
Just a mental thing for me. I feel more confident with more things in my favor. I basically have an importance list... 1. The property & stand location are the biggest priorities. Unfortunately, Ive never had a property that I really felt confident on. 2. Wind direction and weather (temps and cloud cover). 3. Scent Blocker/Scent Lok + spraying down. Gives me a mental advantage, but just wearing it isnt enough. Its everything from the care of the clothing, to the storage of it, to dressing in the field, etc. I can see why someone might think scent reducing clothing is a gimmick, but Ive never had a bad experience with it, and I do believe that its saved my hunt on a few different occasions. If it does give me an added advantage, even the slightest advantage, Ill take it!
With that much wind in your face...you could probably take a dump in your blind and the deer wouldn't know
Heart Failure With that much wind in your face...you could you could be laying dead a week in your blind and the deer wouldn't know.
Last season I hunted a couple times a week, every week, from October 1st to January 15. Saw deer almost every time I went, and most of the time they were down wind. Got busted ONCE! No scent block clothes! Just some camo clothes from walmart washed in baking soda. I usually sprayed down with scent killer. Nothing fancy. Nothing expensive.
This is what I do. Of course where my main place is I don't really have to play the wind a whole lot. It swirls so much I think it confuses everything in the woods. The only time I have ever had any trouble is in a west wind. If its west they bust me every time. Anything else even whens its blowing straight from me to them I really never have a problem. I think its just the geography of the place and how the creek bottom runs. Just kind of throws the air every direction except for a west wind.
