I saw this last night on animal planet.

    http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/captive_hunts/

It was very disturbing of individuals selling hunts when it is not real hunting.
Watch it, when it is on in your location.

I like real fair chase hunting myself.

I saw just a part of the show and I agree that it is a little disturbing.

I haven't said much about it on these forums for fear of stepping on toes, but I almost feel the same way about baiting deer (or any animal for that matter). Mineral blocks, water pools, planting food... it all just seems to take some of the sport out of it. Now if I had to kill for my food I would be all for getting a deer by any means, but I doubt most of us have to kill a deer in order to eat.

just my opinion, don't blast me too much!

Didn't click the link. Human Society = PETA

I think anyone who doesn't kill a deer with a homemade longbow and arrows, from the ground, is taking the sport out of hunting. Those new fancy compounds are practically guns. Don't even get me started on treestands. Might as well just use dynamite.

I also hunt in nothing but a loincloth. Yeah it gets a little cold, but I like to keep it sporting.

There were some disturbing images on the show, no doubt about it. It was a smear on all hunting IMO, not just canned hunts. Last night was the first time I've ever watched Animal Planet, and it was also the last.

Your point is taken, but I don't agree. I don't care if you use a rifle, a compound or long bow. If you are baiting an animal to a certain spot, it isn't hunting... it's "waiting". Again, just my opinion.

It's not just deer either, my buddy asked me last year if I wanted to do a black bear "hunt" with him in Wy. After he told me what was involved, I kindly turned it down. Sitting over a can full of food waiting for a bear to walk by just isn't my cup of tea.

I prefer land mines around bait, Just because of the burn time on dynamite and the animal can't see me throw it ,lol, seriously captive hunts are pretty disgusting.

Would sitting a treestand be hunting, or "waiting"? I would consider it waiting. Too many whitetail waiters in the woods. We need more whitetail hunters.

I may be naive here, but I'm guessing not everyone has the same definition for "sport" when it comes to hunting. Some might thoroughly enjoy the work that goes into baiting bears, or planting whitetail food plots. Some might think just walking around the woods is taking the easy way out.

But I'm also a big proponent of not forcing my beliefs on others. Except when it comes to Germ. That guy needs some direction.

I don't disagree that a lot of work might go into baiting/preping a site for a hunt. I also do a lot of prep work. Lots of scouting and time in the woods. But you are right, someone might think walking around the woods is the easy way.

So, am I the only one that thinks there is a difference between going into the woods and finding where the animals are and hunting that area (in a stand or not) and placing food/minerals and water in a spot and hunting over that spot?

I don't know if I would consider hunting near crops the same as baiting. There is usually a whole lot of crop to hunt, the deer could come through that crop anywhere. I think of baiting as a very localized thing.

I'm certainly no master baiter, but I believe the bear guys scout areas to put bait. I don't think its as simple and plopping it down somewhere and hope they show up.

Well, there was an unfortunate incident where I ended up in a briar patch. It wasn't good. I started wearing the loincloth after that.

    lol

Gee, with all that scouting who needs bait!? Never said the didn't scout, but it is still basically plop it out and hope they come back. again and again.

I think you are misinterpreting my comments a little. I don't think baiting is wrong, I just think it takes some of the sport out of it. And yes perhaps our definition of sport is different. Maybe fair chase is a better phrase for what I am talking about.

mineral licks are legal in Mo. here where i hunt and i use them with game cameras to get some pics of deer using my ground during this time of year, But here is the deal i have never seen a deer use a lick in the fall of the year during hunting season so maybe thats why there legal here??
And i do have natural springs on my place and creeks but again i dont see deer at them during hunting light.
and we have a lot of crops every year but it's not put out for the deer but they do a lot of damage so we do hunt them at times very hard to control there numbers.
With all the crops here and acorns it seems funny to me deer would rather walk over to a bag of apples or pile of corn when there is hundreds of acres of beans and corn standing feet away.

I guess it's just a difference in perception in how and what part of the country you are raised as to how others pursue game thats all. It's not all wrong it just different.

After watching the video I'm left with mixed emotions.

One one hand, it's hard to see the "other" side of hunting where people literally pay thousands of dollars to go kill these animals. While I don't necessarily condone it, nor would I participate in it, I don't think it's the government's place to tell them they can or can't do it. Especially when hundreds of thousands of captive animals are killed on a daily basis to stock our restaurants and grocery stores. At the end of the day - what's the difference?

Humane society was once very public about their position of hunting. They don't care if its captive or not, they are anti-hunting. Don't let em fool you.
