I think the prices of equipment is getting out of hand, mostly. I say mostly because there are instances where you're paying high dollar because its high quality. I learned this when I bought a Spot Hogg Hunter Hogg-it sight years ago. It's the last site I'll need to buy for a very long time.

I think for a lot of us, we need to prioritize things and keep it in perspective. Do you REALLY need to upgrade a 2 year old bow or can that money be spent buying more trail cams, or other hunting items that will just improve your arsenal and make you a better hunter. Or, save that money and put toward an out of state trip you've been wanting to book.

I for one have decided that I would rather put money into other gear I would like to have instead of a new bow this year. That and of course put money back for my Illinois trip this coming fall.

Prices are set at what they are, to sell the volume they want (for the most part).

The margins have never been higher - but the equipment has never been "better".

A % of people will always shoot the latest and greatest....that % feeds many mouths.

People never walk into a trade show booth and ask...."what's old".

Economics is the name of the game.

Margins have never been higher? I've not met one manufacturer that's been saying that. Costs yes, margins, no.

Good point. I didn't say it right. There's more products to make a margin on, but yes, slimmer margins. Diversity is all over. As is private labeling.

Isn't this the land of opportunity? Where there's a will there's a way...

So, I pose the question, "What's stopping you?"

In the "real world"......WIll hopped a plane a couple years ago.....flew to NC....Hunted for 3-4 days....and added another state to his list of taking a big game animal in.

If he spent $400, I'd be surprised (airfare and licenses included). That's the kind of stuff he's talking about.

Ask any of the guys who went out west to elk hunt last year - what they paid for a week or more of elk hunting in CO. That's the kind of stuff he's talking about.

    ;)

Much, much more then $400.00. ;) I'm not arguing with what Will Is saying either. Allot of hunts are there for the taking. It's all a matter of just doing It, Instead of talking It.

Exactly!! and if you are self employed like me there are No vacation times, only missed work, and wages. I know what I spent on a trip to NW Nebraska the last 4 years in Gas and eats alone, not counting tags.

Bowhunting is a Hobby I Love and I have devoted most of my life to achieving some goals. The thing is we have to remember it is a Hobby and what is important in life, Family, especially kids & grandkids, Health, etc. I've got a grandson that has started shooting a bow this year and there will be 3 others behind him. I guarantee you my next few years will be devoted to spending as much time as possible with them teaching them to shoot, teaching them to hunt, teaching them Ethics of the outdoors, but most important of all teaching them what really is important in Life! :)

Unfortunately Work interferes with Hobbies! ;)

    Dan,

I'm sure you meant to say, "Some have to make excuses."

In the real world, we all know a lot of hard work pays big dividends. We also know a little prudence and education can go a long way. It seems these days more and more people are waiting for the pie to fall from the sky. I'm not one of those people...

For the record, I choose to make less money per year than an average Federal Government employee. I purchased my own education (beginning at high school). I worked for and earned nine different professional licenses. I own three homes, two of which I built with my own two hands- shopping wisely for the building materials. My spending is on investments verse foolish items I do not need. I manage by applying the frugal skills given to me by great parents and grandparents. If I see something I want, I go after it-never making excuses as to why I cannot have it!

I guess I'm an anomaly in the real world....

Steve me buying bows has little to do with anything. How many bows do you think I have Bought in the last 5 years? Even the couple I bought I paid dealer for and then sell them while they still have some value in the market (Stupid Not to) I think from talking to you on the phone and seeing your posts that you are a working man and you have my respect even though a lot of our choices are different. I'm not telling you that you are just making excuses. I figure you know what you want to do and can do. Hardly affects my opinion of you as a hunter.

Some are obviously not in touch with how the majority of people in America get by or where their priorities are. Obama comes to mind.

Everybody makes Choices and just because mine are different than someone elses then I'm not going to tell them they are making excuses. One of the Best BowHunters I know has never killed a deer outside of IL.

He could care less if if he killed one in each state that had deer. He'll take the 100's he has killed here.

There are a few species I'd still like to Hunt, maybe I will, but if I don't get the chance I enjoy what is available to me. I could care less about hunting many species. Africa comes to mind. If someone offered me a free trip I'd rather stay home and take a quarter on the $. If someone wanted to go then more power to him. I'm not making excuses, I just don't want to go.

I run 2 businesses and have since 1980. I am Not retired. I only know Hard, hands on Work. When I am gone and out of touch for a week, it is a nightmare sometimes catching up. Murphy's Law always comes into play. I can squeeze away once or twice a year but that's it. and for the Record I've built a Few houses myself, as well as a few churches, etc.

    Dan

    Well....It's getting a little better.

As least you're now attempting to veil your condescending comments.

    Gotta start somewhere.

You're kidding, right? I was paying him a compliment.

    Here comes the band!

Now, just keep your BS to yourself. I'm out. Do BH a favor and do the same.
