I personally enjoy all day sits . I pack enough snacks / reading material / extra phone charger and thoroughly enjoy my time out in the woods just relaxing. A comfy stand is a must !! I usually do all day sits during the rut only - nothing better than having a hot doe come running by around 12-1 pm with a parade of bucks behind her lol.
I usually do all day sit for gun season Its easy as I am in a box blind most the time I usually have snacks and can fidget around if I want. I will for bow season but don't make a habit of it. I usually take a hour nap on all day sits with the bow I use a climbing belt and put it around me like a seat belt but higher on my chest and take a hour nap mid day or so.
If I'm hunting at home I usually won't sit all day. Too easy to walk back to the house for lunch and a break. When I go on out of state hunts I'm there to hunt and that's what I do. It's always a group of us that go and we all try to sit all day if we can. Sometimes it's just too damn cold making all days impossible but we pack lunches and snacks and usually make it the whole day. Me and my one buddy sometimes meet half way between each other's stands for lunch quick then head back to our stands. It's tough sitting all day that's for sure. I've gotten a little better at it as I get older but it's still very difficult without lots of action. I'm headed to Nebraska Friday morning for 14 days, will be trying to do as many all day sits as possible while there.
I do late October to early December and I have taken my largest bucks between 11 am - 2 pm. Because I hunt public land it maybe the other hunters headed to the truck that kicks them up. If at all possible I hunt out of my tree lounge stand and can sleep in that thing. Read a paper back book while snacking and drinking apple juice. Due to wind I may have to hit the ground or move to another stand here in Kansas. Next week headed to western Kansas for a week of dawn to dark hunting.
Headed to MO in a week and planning for 5 in a row if needed. It's not as hard as it sounds, snacks and a good thermos help a bunch. Last year I had a 130" buck @40 yrds at 12 noon on the first day of Nov. 80 degrees and following a doe. That sealed it for me, I need to be out there. I sit all day from this weekend through thanksgiving. Between my dad and myself many nice bucks have been shot around noon time. With the unpredictability of the rut all day sits can be very beneficial
I will sit all day after Halloween generally. I have shot my two best bucks in the middle of the day, and find the time in the tree worth it. I use my phone and other personal methods to make time fly by.
Ok so when you do all day hunts what stand are you using. I think an all day sit would be tough in my Lone Wolf.
I use a lone wolf climber that I use for all day sits or we have several chain ons. I typically stand up for 20 minutes or so just to stretch or keep from getting too stiff. Sitting all day isn’t for everyone but if you can manage to put extra time in the stand, especially during the rut, you give yourself a better chance. Like they say, can’t shoot a deer if you’re not in the woods. The key is making yourself comfortable. This may require carrying in a thicker more padded seat, bringing in plenty of snacks and water. Another bonus, especially when it gets cooler, is staying warm!
Which climber? I just sold my hand climber and bought a sit and climb and put a Hazmore seat on it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I use the hand climber. My dad switched to the sit and climb a few years ago and he will never use a hand climber again.
I've seen numerous bucks during the 11:00-1:00 time span, but the biggest buck I've ever seen while hunting (Alberta) came to my rattling at 12:15 in the afternoon! I did not get a shot on him though.
We sit all day at our property up here in Northern MN. The rut falls over rifle season so the deer are on the move all day. I bring my phone and Kindle to pass time. My theory is that I'm better to read an article and stay in the stand then go to the car or back home. (Can't shoot them on the couch). :-). We try to limit our movement to reduce bumping deer and leaving our scent around the property. We also bring sleeping bags and will climb in boots and all, you can hunt in sub-zero temps for extended periods of time this way.
I have hunted all day in my tree saddle and found that to be comfortable. I have even fallen asleep waiting for the sun to come up dangling from the side of the tree. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
yes during my rut hunt vacation, has usually been worth the effort---and NO (&%$% SMART PHONE either just Me and Ma Nature
Having three boys under the age of 6, I can't hunt all day because my wife would kill me. If I am travelling out of state, I hunt all day because that is what I am there to do. Usually my sits are the first three and last three hours of daylight.
I do them all the time, can do 5-6 days straight and sometimes I'll do an all day sit in October, December or January. If I want to hunt evening it is an all day sit, mornings are by far the best times for the land I hunt. I drive too far to go home for a few hours and hanging out in a restaraunt or big box store is way more boring than a slow midday sit. If I get burned out I take a day off and hit it again the following day. They're easy for me, hang out in the livd from the stand thread and time passes much quicker, especially when others are having banner days or a live track occuring.
I used to set in one spot from dark to dark several times a year...I just can't do it anymore, lol. I still may hunt all day but I shift throughout. Where I'm located in the jet stream, it's not uncommon to start off with a Northwest wind in the morning and finish with a Southeast wind in the evening, so I will shift locations accaccordingly in that respect, And.... I may hunt down wind or even right in doe bedding in the morning, daylight to 8-8:30. Shift to a social hub or terrain/cover funnel from 10 to 2ish. Then shift to a known or suspected buck bed from 3 to dark.
I sit all day normally from 5 till 6. No cell phone service where I hunt so the phone is not an option. It does suck, but my biggest buck to date was killed chasing a doe at 1.
I do a lot of all day sits, all season long. I always take food, drink and charger with me. The main thing for me is deer movement and the weather. Yesterday I did a all day sit and didn't see anything but the weather was nice so I felt comfortable. A few weeks ago it was a little hot but I was seeing deer every 2-3hrs so I sat all day. I drive almost an hr to my hunting place so I try to maximize the time in stand every time. I do think that if I was hunting in my backyard I would do a lot less all day hunts except during the rut.
