Can a wore out bowstring/cables cause inconsistent accuracy?

I'm still fairly new to the world of archery and bowhunting. I shoot a Mathews switchback xt and over the last month or two I have noticed that my accuracy isn't as good as what I had been shooting. I use Zebra hybrid string and cables which have started showing signs of wear and tear over the last couple of weeks. The owner of my local Mathew's pro shop, who is also a trusted family friend, said that my string and cables still have some life left to them but as with everything else, I like to get a second and even third opinion. Could the aging of my sting and cables possibly be the cause for my recent drop in accuracy with my bow?

Old strings, and especially stock strings "what your Zebras are really" tend to stretch to no end..When a string/cable stretches it effect the tune on the bow, you'll lose poundage over time, your draw length will change over time and pretty much a bow just won't shoot like it did when the strings were still in spec. I've seen a lot of guys/shops glance over a set of strings and give them the OK just because they don't see any cut strands or a bunch of bad serving separation but they never bother to measure the specs out on the bow or check cam timing...My best advice, get some good quality strings from a reputable custom builder and don't fall for the line every Mathews dealer gives you that you "Have to run Mathews strings on a Mathews bow or they won't shoot right"....Nothing could be further from the truth.

Exactly what J-Daddy said! Get some good strings put on it and don't fall for the if you don't shoot Zebra it won't shoot right line....lol.

As strings stretch, creep, etc.; cam timing can change, brace height can change, peep height can change, peep rotation can occur, kisser height can change, nock height can change...I think you get the picture. Strings don't last forever unfortunately. Some of what I mentioned only happens in extremely worn strings, but can happen.

I agree with most of what is being said here. It sounds like you are in need of a new string and cable. The old Zebra Hybrids should have never been put on that bow. The SBXT came with the Barracuda string, which had a tendency to have serving separation and peep rotation. I have strung a lot of bows over the past few months with the new Mathews Trophy strings and cables. Great product!
