I just got my first bow this year, and now i am looking to invest in some camo. I have only gun hunted in the past, where i could get away with jeans and t-shirt in the blind.... I know i should probably invest in some that offers some scent protection (scentlok, scentblocker, etc...) but my question is....do i need that with all of my layers, or just an outer layer...do i need to buy a shirt if the jacket has it?
I personally use scent eliminating sprays more then the carbon suits. The effectiveness of carbon suits is debatable. There was recently a court ruling against Scent-Lok which said their product does not work as advertised. Concentrate on using scent free detergents, soaps and sprays on yourself and the camo you do buy more so then carbon suits. Personally I like Under Armour gear. I find it very comfortable and it keeps me warm.
that is what i was looking at...i'm a coach so naturally, half of my wardrobe is under armour anyways....
I would start with some inexpensive camo cotton BDU pants for early season and a lightweight fleece jacket. For this time of the year and later depending on where you hunt I would look to heavier fleece. stuff. I wouldn't spend the money on carbon clothing. I don't believe you can beat a deers nose. That being said, I let my camo air out outside for usually 12 hours or more prior to hunting as much as possible. Play the wind and buy quiet camo that blends in. I also carry some rain gear that I use a few days each year. Good luck!
Like others have said, save your money and leave the scent blocker/scentlok stuff on the racks. You will be far better served if you buy some camo and thermal layers instead. What camo and other things you'll need really depends on your location the weather you'll encounter. If you're like me, you're hunting temps anywhere from 80 degrees to 15 degrees through a season. This requires different layers of clothing. Early season, warmer weather is easy. Its the cold weather stuff that gets you. I actually just wrote a pretty lengthy blog post on my recommendations and tips for cold weather gear. See here: http://autumn-encounters.blogspot.com. Whatever you choose, make sure its quiet. The camo pattern doesn't make that much of a difference overall, but noise levels sure do.
Paying full price for the scentblocker stuff is crazy, but if you can find a deal like I did on ebay than it is well worth the price. I got a scentblocker fleece jacket and pants for 160 shipped off of ebay. It is in their treestand camo and is a very comfortable, warm camo and the extra carbon layer can't do anything but help control my scent, even if it is just a little bit. I still use sprays and keep all my camo in tupperware containers and really watch what scents I allow around them. But for $160 for a camo suit like I got, it is well worth the price just in comfort without concidering it to be a "scentblocker" outfit. Good luck with your season
