So what camo do you guys use to bowhunt out of stand in cold weather?
The stuff I have is for shotgun use, it's very thick and rather baggy. It does very well as last year I could sit in basically 0 degree weather with no issues.
However, this stuff isn't any good for bow hunting. There's a very good chance of my string running across my arm.
My initial thought was one of those arm gaurds to hold the clothing back.

I would make the investment for some more camo condusive to bow hunting as I really like the lost camo pattern, but warmth is a factor.

    Thoughts?

with the newer base layers out there that helps cut down on the bulk factor. meaning you can wear thinner garments and still stay warm. with good base layer in place you can sit through just about anything.

My camo is about as thick as a pair of blue jeans but then I have thurmals that are prutty thick I wear under them. My arms aren't bulky either tho. It works prutty good for here even when it rets really cold

I will elaborate more on my attire.
I have under armour base layers. Their cold gear.
My middle layer is an under armour hooded sweatshirt, or scent a way 1/4 zip fleece and a lined pair of windbreaker pants.
My outer layer is my camo.

Look at getting Field and Stream No Scent. It's a little thicker and with the base layers it will keep you warm. You can get a set for about $100 at ****'s when they get their hunting stuff in.

Depending on how cold it gets I have a few options to go with. For the most part my outter layer will be the cabelas wind shear wooltimate stuff, and I have a bunch of different layering clothes to put on under that whether it be silk base layers, polypro wicking layers or long john style long underwear. And actually, I will be wearing mostly all of that come mid season (i get cold really easy and I'm a little sissy when I get cold). I also have a bunch of thinner stuff that I can wear if I ever end up going to florida for a hunt with the wife.

I wear UA cold gear tops and bottoms for my base layer. On top of that I wear a pair of sweat pants and a sweatshirt. Then my longsleeve camo shirt and camo pants (the cheap walmart jean pants). When it gets colder like in late November or so I wear my artic shield jacket. Its a very light jacket but is somewhat windproof and waterproof. And it isnt baggie at all. Love it. Then when it gets super cold I wear my Artic Shield overalls. I dont put these on until I reach my stand though because walking in them and my jacket make me sweat horribly. Super warm. Only thing that I really want to find is a really tight fitting warm gloves but I may be dreaming on this one.

Hey Dan, for glooves, what I've found that works really well...
I like to use the cheap poly/cotton glooves that are very tight and cheap. I think that's the materials at least. Then I have medium or light remington glooves from walmart. It doesn't make sense but I've been in 0 degree snowy weather and no problem at all.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

What I use now is a mitten type glove with covered fingers under it so when I need to use my fingers they at least have something covering them up. But my fingers always freeze unless I use hot hands. LOL. Love those little packets of warmth!

In November, during the rut, here is my setup.

UA Cold Gear top and bottoms. Polartec expedition weight long johns. Cabelas Wool Military Fatique sweater and sometimes, if its bitterly cold, a Rocky heavy weight fleace vest. This all goes under my Grey Wolf Woolens Wolfskin jacket and pants with the wind proof lining.

With this setup, I'm good down into the teens with some chemical handwarmers to help me along.

No matter what you wear, the key is staying dry getting to the stand in the morning. Wear as few layers as possible walking in, take your time and keep sweat to a minimum. Leave your body cool down before putting on your layers. You'll stay warmer and more comfortable.

My base layer is under armor cold gear, top and bottom and also a pair of liner socks with 2 pairs of wool socks on. Then a t-shirt, sweat shirt, fleece jacket, then my camo on top. On bottoms a pair of thermals over the UA and then my heavier pair of camo pants.

I think you hit on a really important detail there muzzyman... the walk into stand. That can make or break your warmth for the day. I have a bad habit of being all hot and sweaty by the time I'm in the stand.

One BIG investment I'm going to make is to get a safety vest. This will let me get my outer layer on much quicker and give me the ability to get in stand quicker.

Like most have stated I wear different layers, mostly UA for me, and do not have any bulky clothes that get in the way.

You are correct. I've "burned" myself in years past by hustling into a stand in the AM and then getting cold by 9am. These days, I probably look like a pack mule hauling most of my clothing in with me and taking my time doing it.

I get to the tree, take my sweet time hanging my climber, allowing myself to cool down. Then its up the tree, slowly. I then slowly begin to add layers as I start feeling cool until I'm dressed. Heck, I've found myself not even needing some layers because I stayed dry to begin with.

Another thing I'd like to point out is location. I can't comment on other parts of the country, but here in the NE, cold feels COLD compared to say, the western states. The reason is the amount of humidity in the air. It's simply more damp here in the fall. This sucks more heat out of you because you don't dry out as fast. Yet another reason to dress in layers and pack as many as you can in with you.

Depends what you mean by cold weather I guess. Where I'm at cold can be 32 to -32. Layers yes but I bring my warm bag with and put it on when I get in the stand. Its the only thing that along with the heater body suit that will allow you to hunt all day from dark to dark in very cold conditions.
A bow hanger and a hand muff around your waist is a must also. Heat packs in your heavy pac boots work well also.

Most of the time I'll wear either a UA heat gear undershirt or a ScentShield S3 Bamboo shirt as my next-to-skin layer. Even when it's super cold out I'll wear these as my first layer. I do this primarily b/c I don't like the super-tight UA ColdGear stuff, and I feel like these wick moisture and are more comfortable. I generally walk to my stand (depending on how far it is and how tough of a walk it is) in just my under shirt - even in 30 degree temps.

My next layer is always my ScentShield S3 Merino Wool. I LOVE this stuff. Best undergarment you can get for hunting IMO. I own both the mid-weight and expedition weight stuff. Mid-weight is great for evening sits or mornings down into the 40's. Colder than that I go Expedition weight. If my walk in is easy or close I'll sometimes wear this into my stand. I try to avoid doing so in most cases b/c the merino wool is a burr magnet.

After that I'll switch between either a light-weight ScentBlocker XLT jacket, or a heavier ScentBlocker fleece jacket. For really cold or windy sits I have a ScentShield sherpa fleece vest w/WindBlocker material in it. Love that thing.

rivers west is warm stuff. it is quiet and "fitting" to the body. A rapper would not wear it because it would not be baggy. take a look at their stuff.

    very very waterproof.
claims to be breathable, it's not.
made in USA, some of them.
