Hey Ohio hunters! I am VERY new to bow hunting (as in, I haven't gone yet), and I am trying to gather all of the needed equipment before heading out into the woods. I live in Salem, Ohio, and I'm wondering what kinds of camo you veterans find to be the best. I was actually thinking about using ATAC-S for fall before winter hits. Anyone tried this? What brands/patterns do you guys prefer?
Small world, I am from East Palestine Ohio and was born in Salem hospital. I use a variety of brands, from Field and Stream to Under Armour, all of which are in a Realtree pattern. However, even though I do it too, I think worrying about the actual patterns of camo are actually to satisfy the human eye, the only thing you really need to be sure of is to break up your outline because that's what a deer notices when identifying you as a human. My grandpa used to hunt in red flannel and had deer walk right past him without spotting him. The most important thing you can do is mind the wind, try to cover/eliminate your scent, and break up your outline. Perhaps wear one pattern on top and another on the bottom, the actual pattern itself is pure preference. There's such a variety and people have hunting success wearing all sorts of "tree" camo, digital camo, and patterned hunting clothes.
what he said^ I use realtree but most patterns will work. Make sure the clothes are quiet when they rub against other things and against itself. Staying as still as possible is also pretty helpful! goodluck!
Thanks guys. That's great to know. As a newbie, I have been stressing over every little detail, so I appreciate the guidance!
I use Mossy Oak Break Up Infinity on the early season and Real Tree Ap in the mid season and late season. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Used nothing but opti-fad and ASAT the last 4 years hunting ohio....seen most camo work well enough though. Use what you like and have confidence in
Just checked out the ATAC-S as I had no idea what it looked like and I think it would work well. I hunt primarily out of treestands and the one thing I look for in a pattern for Ohio is a more open design like a Predator, ASAT, Vertigo, Realtree AP or maybe the Mossy Oak Treestand. The one other thing I don't like is a lot of black in the pattern which a lot of name brands seem to always use a lot of. Some of the older Mossy Oak patterns had a lot of black in them and it seemed for the terrain and types of trees made me stick out like a sore thumb. Another thing you can do is take pictures of your stand locations from different angles to see what pattern might work best.
