Alright, I have a buddy of mine that loves to eat venision and wants to be in the woods but doesn't want to shoot a deer. He asked me if he could join me on some of my hunts so I agreed as long as he would run a camera for me. Since I have never been in a tree with a cameraman before what pointers can you share that I can take with us next week when we head out for the first time ever?
Its gonna be ugly the first coupe of times. First, he will need to be able to run the camera in his sleep in the dark. Understanding manual focus, white balance, how to find deer in the camera and how far to zoom in on the deer when its time to take the shot. Once he feels comfortable you will need to come up with some kind of communication between the 2 of you for several situations.....(seeing deer, are you on the deer, i hear something, dont turn around etc). If you are using a camera arm you will need to provide plenty of time to get setup before the hunt and understand how high to set the arm in relation to your seated position. (On a hang-on, i sit backwards on the seat and attach the arm mount a little higher than waist high) It just takes practice. If you can, go out in the yard and practice getting setup with him a few times. It will help.
I totally expect the first several times to be a total disaster. Just looking forward to him getting out in the trees with me. I do have a camera arm so he will have to get used to that. I didn't even think about the communications. Thanks for pointing that out. And I think we will try to get setup in the yard this week before the weekend comes! Thanks!
Just found out that my buddy that wants to film went out today and bought a bunch of camo. Also found out that he will probably only get to spend one or two days total the remainder of hte season in a tree stand. Not quite sure the point of it then but it's his choice. Now to get on some deer to make it memorable for him!
