I am wondering what the difference is between large cams and smaller cams on bows. I notice a trend to keep getting larger in cam design. Some bows still have normal sized cams (i.e. some Hoyt bows and APA bows) while other are massive (think Mathews Monster). Is it for getting the string as far away from the point of rotation as possible? Is this only for aggressive bows?
It's all in cam design, IMO size has little to do with it. PSE went smaller with most of their cams this year and picked up speed.
I'm no expert, but I believe BigCountry is correct that its all in the design. I believe you're seeing larger cams on most bows for two reasons. First, a larger, more rounded out cam will be smoother and feel easier to draw. Second, since the cam is so large and more "round", keeping the draw cycle in the power stroke region of the cam will yield more speed. I believe it might be a leverage thing. So in a sense, its the best of both worlds. Smoother draw cycles and higher speeds. Anyone think I'm close here?
Big cams Isn't bigger always better? lol I actually think with today's influx of new super short bows they needed the extra string storage to get the longer draw lengths. Maybe it is a performance issue though, or a combo.
