First year turkey hunter here. How often do you call? Went out tonight for my first hunt ever, and didn't see anything.

Depends on setting: Are you running and gunning? If so, I like to call every five minutes or so ... or every time I think I've went about 250 yards or so and may be within earshot of another tom. I hunt a buddy's place in KS where the birds regularly travel up and down a creek we're hunting on all day long... Again, I call every five minutes or so because birds move in and out of earshot all day.

If you were in the Midwest hardwoods and just sitting at the base of a tree? Yeah, I'd agree with not so much...

Thanks guys! I am hunting South Central Minnesota. About 15 acres of private land, bordered on 2 sides by a river. They seem to like the river. I have 2 blinds set up, and will be hunting out of those.

About 10 miles South of Austin. Not too far from the Iowa border. Where are you at?

I've probably even asked you before, I can't ever remember!

I'm about halfway between Mankato and Brookings on highway 14.

I feel turkeys are more vocal earlier in the day. I like hunting the first couple hours (6-8am) and especially 10am-1pm. After that, they don't talk as much. You certainly can get them to respond, but not as much. Can you hunt the first half of the day? If you can't, try to figure out where they are going and meet them there. Set up and do limited calling.
