Hard to believe but today started off in the snow and it continued until 10:00 this morning. I'm only hunting at 4000 feet elevation about an hours drive from the beach in SoCal. Beautiful morning but slow hunting all day. Put about 7 miles up and down the whole time before I finally saw a few deer about 250 yards out on the other side of a creek. I got about to the middle of the creek when I realized it was over. the deer busted my buddy walking down a trail about 300 yards to our west and up into the chaparral they went. He didn't even know they were there. Bummer but I probably would have busted them in the next 50 yards anyway. So we take off drive towards home and give ourselves just about an hour of shooting light at piece of private property I recently got permission to hunt. We so up get out of the car and have a little stretch from the drive. We walk up a path to go take a look around and bam it all comes together. We walk right up on a threesome. Two good does and a button buck. Lucky little fella. I sneak up staying behind a tree until I get a clean broadside 45 yard look. I pull back settle in and shwack. Perfect hit we watch the doe run about 65 yards and get the crazy legs and down she goes died in about 15 minutes or probably quicker we waited and hour anyways to approach however we could see she was down. Took her home and got her in the fridge by 10:30. Wish I could have pulled of the public land today but being that this was my last hunt of the season we got her done. The better to bust you with! No but really California blacktail mule deer. Nothing like a whitetail. Smaller more adapted to the mountain terrain here. They don't pattern at all really like a whitetail. Very difficult for a spot and stalk. But obviously it is possible. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
