....and man are they right. 47 acres on Wednesday and 53 acres today, searched border to border. I hit up every deer trail and followed every set of tracks. I did manage to put my trail camera out in a good spot though. I found a few good beds/trails, some really good spots for next year and jumped 4 does. You can bet it wont be the last time im out this year.
Im with ya Jeff, i have found exactly 1 as well. And it was by accident during my first archery season (2006). I had missed my very first buck ever (It was my first shot with my bow at an animal as well), and when i got down to find my arrow i noticed it. It had to have been laying there for at least 3 years it was so worn out and chewed on. I never did find my arrow either, good trade off i guess.
2.5 more hours searching about 65 acres and nothing. An amazing amount of tracks and beds but no bone.
I just searched a farm that's around 100 acres or so, and came up with nothing. I hit the feeding area, the bedding areas and alot of trails and still found no bone. I did see a bunch of turkeys though. Im gunna wait until i check my trail cam later in the week to go out agian.
Keep looking and you will find you some bone. If you notice, in each of your update posts you say something you learned about your spots
x2. Last year I searched about 30 hours and only found two and they were yearling sheds but I learned SO SO much about our property, it's really incredible. This year I have logged 11 hours with no bone but I am going to really start picking it up from now till green up. But again, I've learned a lot about the property still.
True that guys. I searched a buddies honey hole today (couple hundred acres) after work and found nothing. We were only out around an hour but found many, many trails and saw some does.
Siman- I don't want to tell you how to shed or anything, because believe me I am no expert. But reading your posts it seems like you are covering a lot ground on each trip. I made that same mistake last year- I'd hit the woods and just walk in a bee line till I hit a property line and then turned right back around. This year, I've logged close to 13 hours but haven't covered probably 50-60 acres because I designate an area Im going to shed, then comb that area over and over and over again just to make sure I didn't miss anything. Again- I don't want to sound like I'm telling you what to do just giving you my two pennies. It can be tedious but I can't help but believe it will help increase our chances. Best of luck.
Actually, i have been following alot of trails and hitting up the bedding areas. I concentrate on high traffic areas. On 3 outta the 5 outings ive been on, the snow was over 7-8 inches deep, so i stayed on the trails and checked the bedding areas. On the last 2, with the snow almost all the way melted, i went out and checked the fields. I carry my binocs with me so that i can scan in the distance. Now i have a question, when you guys are out looking, do you keep your eyes ahead or down by your feet. I find myself looking around me feet alot.
I try to keep my eyes looking ahead. I'm like you, when you've been out for a while without finding anything it's easy to just drop your head and walk and look only whats right in front of you. I like to take my time when sheddin and I'll usually walk 20-30 paces with my head down, stop and scan all around me, including where I just came from then get to walking again. The first shed I ever found I literally walked right up on it. I was walking through a bedding area, looked down and there it was. It was also a spike shed.
My biggest problem is going to fast and always looking off in the distance, instead of taking care of what is right in front of you. I reality you really should do a mix of the two, keep an eye on the close surroundings but also keep your head up.
Went out again today, no sheds, but i did find a dead doe. Im going to go back later and see if she has any broadheads in her or anything.
Congrats to you and your brother on the two sheds. Hope you find the other side to the one buck !! Tim
My brother out did me today. He found his 2nd shed of the year (4 points, and from our buddies deer that he shot this year), a dead doe (probably the one i couldnt find), and one of my arrows. Sheesh!
Went out a couple more times last week with no luck. My neighbor saw a big buck with both his antlers still on, so were gonna give it a few weeks and hit it again.
Went out for a couple hours today on one of my buddies beautiful properties. Didnt find any sheds, but we did find a dead coyote or fox and some amazing stand locations.
