    Looking at getting another freezer.

Have a deep freezer right now (can't remember brand) but have been looking at upright freezers.

Are there any disadvantages to upright freezers? Are they just as energy efficient as deep freezers?

Any brands you would shy away from?

I'm not opposed to another deep but thought I'd see what you guys had to say about uprights.

I've gotta a chest deep freeze. Only down side is digging stuff out. Don't know how efficiency compares to upright.

I think they are pretty close in efficiency. One of the biggest things with freezers is how much free air space there is because that gets changed out when you open the door. chest freezers can typically be packed tighter, but the negative to that is it can take longer to get what you want out leaving the door open longer. Here is mine loaded 1/2 cow, 1/2 pig, remainder of my last deer and some chicken and fish.

^ That's why I like the idea of an upright so much more than a chest. I can separate things much easier and get to much easier than piling everything on top of everything else.

I'm not a freezer expert by any means, but I would think the uprights might be a little less energy efficient for 2 reasons. Most are equipped with an automatic defrost where as chest freezers are usually manual defrost. I think this is because when you open the door of an upright freezer the cold air essentially falls out and is replaced by the warmer, more moist air in your house or garage thus causing frost buildup, as well as probably causing the freezer to run more often, depending on how often the door is opened. When you open a chest freezer you lose far less cold air because the air cannot rise up and out of the chest freezer.

So my reasons would be 1. Upright freezer may run more often, and 2. It may need to defrost itself more often.

I've got both. I like the upright because it's easy to get stuff out without digging. With that said I can store a LOT more in the chest style freezer.

Note on how to maximize freezer efficiency. Empty storage containers. As you empty the freezer fill any space with sealed empty storage containers or ice cream buckets. By taking up that empty space with sealed containers when you open the freezer there is less volume of air being replaced and having to be cooled.

The downside to an upright, which I learned the hard way this summer, make sure nothing can shift and tou get the door fully sealed. I lost a lot of meat when i wemt down to get some deer steaks and noticed a puddle of water on the floor. Either I didn't fully shut it, or after getting something out a package shifted and bumped the door open.

Other than that completely happy with my upright. Had it for 7 years now trouble free not the easiest to store a head and cape in though
