30.06 with a 150 Grain PSP and a .308 with the same grain are virtually identical ballistically . However, the 30.06 allows room for more powder charge to shoot a larger bullet, say a 180 or 200 grain, at virtually the same speed... so you don't have to change your scope settings.(though you always need to check) I shoot a BAR 30.06 and I also shoot a Remington pump .308 and a model 742 in 30.06. All of them are fine deer guns, just the '06 is a bit more versatile.
I have the TC Encore and I love it. I have it in a pistol in .308 and a shotgun in 20 gauge (fully rifled and scoped). This is my deer gun, but they just legalized rifles for one of the counties I hunt, so I want a rifle caliber for a new rifle. The .270 seems to be the direction I am leaning to. If I go with the new gun option, it will be the Browning A-Bolt or the Remington 700. These two guns have been around a long time and I have read so many good things about them. Savage makes a good, cost effective gun also. I have had an A-Bolt (12 gauge) and a Savage 110 (.22-250) and really liked them both. Good luck on whatever you choose. Sal
