So this has happened twice so I figured I better post it up here so see if I am an idiot. Twice I have seen deer in the distance 60-120 yards and decided to look through my binocs to see more details. Both times the deer were in cover and I was using my binocs to look THROUGH the brush - you all know what I mean. Here is how it happened last night (almost exactly like before). I see a small deer eating some shrub across some power lines. I slowly reach down and grab my binoculars looking at the deer the whole time. I move them slowly up and tilt my head down a little to get my eyes in the glasses. Then move the glasses up with my head to the deer. THE MOMENT they come into view (because now I see more deer through the glass) they haul ass. Has happened like that twice now and it sucks. Probably could have taken a nice doe last night. My only idea is that my binocs are BIG and the glass is reflecting to them. I am not bringing them anymore till I figure this out.
Could be the reflection, if you're facing toward sun? I've used boat binos to hunt before lmao, those things were huge and weighed a ton. I would cup my hands around the objectives to block glare. I got tired of lugging them around so I just bought a compact pair from cabelas for like $70. They also could have winded you, when they busted, did you happen to notice the direction of the wind?
You did mention you looked through the brush... Was there something thicker to break your outline apart behind you as well? It could have been numerous things that went wrong, so just trying to help.
Were you in your car? Because they may have just noticed the car on the road. lol They probably winded you both times. When you left your arms up to hold your bino's extra odor is released from your pits. Try bring some scent away deodorant with you and apply after you get in the stand.
I was in my treestand and sadly enough because of the angle I didn't have good backing so my outline could have been a problem. To add tot he problem I was facing the moon once and the setting sun the second time. Feeling like an idiot. So it was probably multiple things.
Thats why they call it hunting and not killing. There are so many factors that can get you busted that the binos may have had nothing to do with it. But most likely was the reflection from them. Should invest in a small pair with non reflective lenses.
