Got busted this morning by a massive 8 point scent checking his scrape line. Moved the ground blind and re-brushed it in. It's pre-rut/very beginning of the rut down here in bama and the deer are few and far between. I'm hunting with a recurve for the first time and it's effective range is 20 yards so I'm set up 15 yards from an active scrape I dump a bottle of good ole tinks every other day in his scrape and it's keeping home coming back. He busted me setting up for the shot because like a dummy I had the sun blazing through the window behind me and I forgot my face mask. So my face was like a neon sign. I've been blessed to set up on and shoot and killed or missed several Dandys in my life but this first year recurve business has got me feeling like an amateur all over again. What are your thoughts on how soon I can rehunt this scrape. Again the deer here in my neck of the woods are few and far between and very spookey. And it's public land but it's a bow only area with little to no pressure. Any thoughts?
With the rut just kicking in, I'd give it a few days. Maybe wait for and overcast day with the right wind. By that time he should be back. But you would want to get back in before he locks in on a doe. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A lot of different bucks use the same scrape so you might as well hunt it, he will be back but most likely in the cover of darkness. I have killed a few downwind of scrapes the rule for me is 40-50 yards for the stand site.
