Cost out the price of lumber/materials used/your time etc... vs. buying a hang on or ladderstand.

On one of the properties I hunt, there s a guy that builds his own stands. He uses 2x4 for the ladder sides and 2x2 for the rungs:confused: with a pallet on top. You wont catch me even getting close to one of his stands.

I just buy my stands and trust the engineers that know what they are doing.

I've built one....never again. Isn't as practical, takes nearly a full days work in the woods that you plan on stealthily hunting, the costs are 2x that of a basic hang on, and they don't even last more than a few years.

It costs more, but even if it DID save money, my time is worth more than that to me.

Never built it, but had a blast designing it!

I need a couple more yrs of hunting this property before I put up a permanent stand.

My brother-in-law and his father whom I hunted with for several years used to make their own stands.

They'd get tubular steel with a mesh grate for the bottom part and the best part was they had a threaded turnbuckle from the main support part going to the bottom platform which they could use to adjust the stand to any tree they hung it on. They also used chains and a slit to lock the chain link into to hang them.

They brazed the whole thing together, and without the chain strap they probably weighed less than 9 lbs? Was a really good concept if they would have replaced the heavy, noisy chain with a quiet nylon strap.

I've built a few, but only when I had extra materials lying around. Mostly shooting houses. I did build a ladder stand out of one of those mechanical ladders. I just adjusted it into an "L" and bolted a platform to the top. Wasn't using it anyway.

if you have any welding skills making a cheap stand is really not that hard I used to make 16 to 18 feet ladder stands for people. they would just back up to the tree and lean them up and strap them to the tree. This was 15 yrs ago and most are still there. I also made a few hang ons in the past. really nothing too it. Mig welder is the best bet.

I've built two ladder stands that have been in a tree for almost ten years. Believe me, they aren't coming down anytime soon and I feel just as safe in them as any hang on or my climber. I used material left over from some deck's I built. They might run a little more than a standard hang on but if you enjoy building things it shouldn't be a problem for you to build one yourself. You might need some extra help to hang it up however.

With the price of steel what it is today, it's deffinately cheaper to buy them.

This is true, unless you already had the materials like i did. I have built a few im my day but still prefer the bought ones.
