I've been looking for a bolt action rifle to do some coyote hunting. I've got some cash saved up and several gift cards, and honestly can't justify dropping over $500 for a gun that might get used a few times a year at most. I've owned a Remington 700 BDL, so the new offerings from Remington don't do anything for me. So I've been looking at the Ruger American, Mossberg ATR, Savage 11, and Howa. I already have a Nikon scope, so I'm looking at just the rifle. Any experience with these?

Can`t go wrong with a savage. I have a few, with no complaints. They are great shooting guns.

Guess I should add the TC bolt gun to the list. Problem is, no one has them in stock where I've been.

Savage axis looks to me like the best "cheap rig". I'm thinking about getting one in 30-06 I have a very clean late 60's Remington model 700 270win now and love it. Grandpa gave it to me so I don't drag it around the forest.

I can't complain about my Savage Model 11 270 WSM, or my Savage .17 cal. Both are very accurate. If you go savage, get the accu-trigger.

I'd like to have a lever action rifle, but I can't deer hunt with a rifle in IL. I'd also like to be able to shoot past 150 yards, so I'm more focused on a bolt action in 204, 223 or maybe even 243.

For coyote hunting? Not so much. Deer hunting in the timber, sure it's a great caliber. 300 yard shot across a picked bean field, not so much. You'd have to have about 2 feet of holdover. For long distance shooting, you want a gun with a nice flat trajectory. At 300 yards, a 22-250 only drops about 7 inches. Huge difference when you are trying to make those long range shots.

    Thanks I love it....

Button- when I bought it it was 425 with the varmint stock (which i have-bulkier grip and forend) and 400 with the predator stock (short and stubby).....it seems price has gone up as im seeing them around 5 to 6 hundred (497 on budsgunshop.com)....it may be due to it being the rifle of the year last year or the year before and it getting a lot of publicity...i bought it before the hype but its still worth it in my eyes

Savage ruger or marlin are also great options for a good price...I have a marlin 308 and love that to

Check out that budsgunshop.com...I get some really good prices on there

I bought a Savage Axis .270 last year. Came with a Nikon 3-940 BDC scope. I forget the price but it was cheap. Shoots cloverleafs at 100 yards.

The 243 is a bit heavy for predator hunting, unless u plan to handload. That would give u many more options, depending on what variation of charge/ bullet that u use that the gun does well with. The 204 is an awesome caliber, very fast and flat shooting. I`ve got a couple 223s,which are also a great caliber. You are way better off with a bolt action as opposed to a lever action.

Illinois yotes aren't worth anything anyways. Might as well get a gun you could use for bigger game if you get smart enough to move out-of-state. ;)

We have a savage 111 in .270 and the ruger is a better gun. The 111 doesn't have the accu-trigger tho'.

My dad had a 243 and there is about 300 hundred rounds in his gun safe. I've shot yotes with a 222, 223, 270, and a 30.06. I don't care if it turns one inside out on impact, I just want them dead. :)
