I agree Spear... I have a couple decent bucks that are close to that date range... and some small bucks in that time frame.
I will very much look forward to your research results. I think this is a great idea! I've killed bucks before in your time frame but not anything big. All of my good ones have been Halloween or after. Blessings.........Pastorjim
Same, most of my bucks were killed either really early season still on their summer routine (mostly dinks and such) or in November, just need to check to make sure there isn't one that I'm forgetting in October.
Im a medium aged, 2 year old buck slayer....hahaha. I think I may have only killed 3 or so bucks age 3 or older. Ive never killed a mature buck from Oct 5 to Oct 20.
Me too lol. On occasion even when I think I'm killing a nice doe, twice in a row it's ended up being a button buck. Ok, enough of highjacking the thread.
Date - 10/13/2013 Location - Up Yours, Illinois Time - Evening Location of Stand - On the ground between bedding and food source. Notes - 27th largest typical killed (ever) in Iroquois County. (Pope & Young Records of North America Volume 4) 1st Place Illinois Deer Classic 2014 (12-point bow typical current year) http://forums.bowhunting.com/bowhunting-talk/he-shoots-he-scores-story-54398/
Haven't killed a monster yet in Ohio but late October the rut is on. Seen some big ones hair yet to get a shoot off.
Date of harvest: 10/20/2009 Location of harvest: Cogan Station, PA Time of harvest: Evening Location of stand: Food (Clover Plot) Buck came out with another 2.5 yr old out of a doe bedding area, cut across the southern edge of the plot (not really feeding as much as cruising). He stopped to tend a scrape and that was that. Temps were not low, nor was there a front. It was fairly high pressure clear sky day. It was 60 degrees when I shot him.
My biggest to date is in my avatar... 192# dressed 8-point 15 October 2015 Harford County, MD (Bel Air) Funnel 5:15-5:30 PM Seeking Doe
10/6/08 7:20 a.m. Western KY (Paducah) Setup along a timbered travel corridor 200 yards from standing corn. He was headed back to bed in the big timber along the edge of a slough.
I have not killed a buck in this time frame. I have trouble convincing myself to go hunt in the warm weather. I typically don't get many pics of bucks until mid October anyway. It is usually mid to late October before I start going out. Even then, I like to knock a doe down first, so I can then concentrate on buck hunting. This is a very interesting thread. I know some friends that have killed nice bucks on cold fronts during Oct. The temperature is an interesting element in this as well.
Date of harvest: 10/13/2007 Location of harvest: Highland, WI Time of harvest: 3:00 PM Location of stand: Paralled trail 80 yds in timber from corn field I have others, but unable to accurately remember dates or locate pics! Buck came thru just as I had climbed up into tree. I was wearing blaze orange as it was youth season. Plus, the temp was ridiculously warm. Another topic, but my largest bucks have been killed on warm days when most other hunters tell me "its too damn hot to hunt" and "nothing will be moving in this heat". Ladies and gentlemen, deer still need to eat and drink.
Here are two my dad shot with dates and notes he made. Date: Oct 21 2002 6:16pm Location: Mower County, SE MN In a funnel, cruising Date: Oct 6 2000 6:38pm Location: Same as above On food, Corn field
October Date Of Harvest: 10/05/2014 Time: 9:00am Location: Suffolk County Long Island NY Stand: Transition Buck was shot 9am traveling east to west, going to bedding area.
October 17, 2008, 4.5 yr old Near Glassboro, NJ About 7:10 am Was hunting in some acorns about 50-75 yards from a bedding area. He came in slowly munching on acorns, not on any deer trail, just taking a few steps, picking up acorns, eating them while stand still for several minutes, than moving a few steps again, repeat. The deer was a surprise, had no pics of him and never seen him before. Was hunting the area because I usually hunt doe areas mid October to get dialed in for the last 10 days of October on bucks moving in for the rut. Most of my mature bucks have been killed between Oct 21 and 31. October 6, 2012, 3.5 yr old About 8 am Near Cadiz, Oh Hunting a small point of trees sticking out into a cow pasture. I killed one other 3.5 yr old on October 13, 2003 but don't have a pic around. Not a big rack, kind of lopsided. About 7:30 am, near Vineland NJ. I was in what I use as an observation stand, in a very open oak flat, filled with acorns where you can see for a long ways. Was sitting there to see what the doe groups were doing. I usually do that from around Oct. 5 to 20 so I know where to focus for the pre-rut. Watched that buck meander in from 75 yards away, not on any trail, just zigging here, zagging there, as he ate acorns.
