Just started deer hunting this past season and, while not successful in terms of shooting a deer, had a very successful and educational experience. I was just wondering when do bucks begin dropping their horns? I know I've found them in late March while turkey hunting, but how early could/should I start looking?
earliest i've ever found them was before christmas, so you can start looking. i no expert on shed hunting though, alot of guys and gals on here know more than i do, good luck
I've found sheds in early December and have also seen bucks carrying racks into April, so it really varies. It seems lots of factors contribute to when they are dropped (genetics, winter severity, nutrition, breeding, etc). To get the most bang for my buck, I usually begin looking in late February to early March as majority of bucks seem to have shed by then, but if the snow isnt too deep, I will look earlier to fight cabin fever! Good luck to you. P.S. They are antlers and not horns
I found a match 12 point set last year on Jan 3rd here in central Illinois. Most of mine I find in February!
Wow thats a great set of sheds. Have you seen that deer since? How likely are you to find the second antler within a somewhat close radius?
I started looking last week when I went coyote hunting, havent found anything yet i did not do much walking that day, mostly looked on the way to where i was going to post.
