I shot a nice buck Friday night, very exciting hunt. He was quartering away at 30 yards, and there happened to be a hole in the brush, so I took the shot. I hit the deer what looked like right where I was aiming, right behind the shoulder. But since he was quartering away, it went in behind one shoulder and stuck into the one on the opposite side. He ran about 100 yds. and I heard him crash. I waited a minute, climber down the tree, and out of no where a beagle comes hauling tail into the thicket I shot him in. I tried my best to shoo the dog away, but he kept howling. He immediately caught track of the deer and went straight to him, in turn, getting him back on his feet and running him off the property. The funny thing is, I didn't find a single DROP of blood, yet the arrow was clearly placed in the right spot (I could see it in him thanks to my lumenok). Do you guys think that this possibly could be a dead deer? I hate meat to go to waste like that, even though it's too late.
I've heard the arrow can block the wound if it stays in and limit blood flow out of the wound. Sounds like u must have hit lung. It's got to die right? Very bad luck with a dog out of no where. Did u stop looking because of property access? Gotta scour the area for blood... hands and knees, under leaves etc.
Sounds like a dead deer...did you follow up after the dog came into play? ?? If the shot was good it was going to kill him irregardless of the dog....and if the dog was running the wounded deer it would be really easy to just listen follow the dog to ...the deer.
Sounds like a dead deer to me. Definitely still need to go out and look for the deer if you can get access to the neighboring property.
I stayed for hours just looking for a hint of blood. Nothing. Thanks for the reply. Have a great season!
Sadly, the property he ran onto is owned by a bunch of arse-holes. Have a great season! Maybe you'll have better luck than I have. This is by far the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me while bow hunting.
If the arrow went in and lodged in the opposite shoulder the deer is dead. I have never seen a deer live after an arrow penetrates the chest cavity. I shot a buck in the shoulder this year and I still am wondering if he is still alive. Was not much blood and the arrow broke off about 5 inches including the broad head. I have not had pictures of him since I shot him.
