Here's some Info I thought was very Interesting. These #'s tell the % of bucks In each of 3 age classes harvested In each state. Some states do not track data like this. Some only track the % of yearling (1-1/2 year old) bucks. If the numbers don't add up to 100%, that's usually because the state lumps all deer 3yrs and up Into one category. All numbers are from the 2008 season. Anterless data here as well. I'd like to know how Missouri could break it down like that since they don't have check stations and 90% of hunters couldn't tell you how old their buck was??
Interesting data, and as JM pointed out, I'd like to know how they collected it and how accurate it is. KS is at 49% 3.5+?!?! They've got some old bucks running around down there.
I also was wondering this while reading it on QDMA. I was told that "surveyors" were sent to processing plants which helped with some of their data. Either way I was please to hear that Missouri is one of only two states, in any region, to place in the top five for every category and came in 2nd to Kansas in the Midwest for QDM principles. Those categories were broke down into four categories: 1) percentage of a state’s WMUs at the desired deer goals 2) percentage of 2008 antlered buck harvest that was 1.5 years old 3) percentage of 2008 antlered buck harvest that was 3.5 years or older 4) percentage of 2008 total harvest that was antlerless deer
Kick me in the crotch right now. PA is the 3rd LOWEST in 3.5+ kills percentage wise. What the heck to we need, a 16 point restriction to let these poor creatures mature? Great info otherwise. Thanks for the post. What an eye opener.
That's pretty neat info(assuming its accurate) I could only imagine PA's numbers before AR. I heard estimates that we had a better than 80% harvest on 15 yr olds.
If one really believes that Virginia's 3.5+ year old buck harvest sits at 26% of the total buck kill, then I have some ocean front property to sell you in Iowa.
NC "Antlerless" is at 52%.....lol What a cop out. What does this mean (as far as buck/doe harvest data)? And yeah....who's verifying the ages when people call their kills in? Nobody even asks!
Louisiana Rules! Do you you suppose that this data is at least as accurate as Wisconsins deer population data??
Here is the call I placed in 2008 to the phone call check in system here in Virginia. Computer voice..."enter total antler points for buck" Me..."6" Computer Voice..."thank you, good bye" How the DNR can then extrapolate that I killed a 1.5 year old, 2.5 year old, 3.5 year old or whatever based on that information is beyond me.
I see some guys do not agree with their states published numbers. I would think Ohio's numbers are fairly accurate.
I know from working closely with IL check stations in the past that I wouldn't stake much on any info they published. Least of the age of Bucks taken. Dan
