Ya I was in Saskatchewan near Pierceland, (western edge). The guides guessed he was in the 275lb range but didn't weigh him for an exact number. The bodies can overwhelm the antlers giving the false impression they are smaller than you think and was told this several times before and during the hunt. Considering this was the 2nd best buck I'd seen, I was really happy. This was my first whitetail hunt, first guided (paid) hunt, and first hunt out of my hometown area so it was all new. I knew he wasn't a giant but considering the reason I was there and it will probably be a long time before I get to go back, I really wanted to bring home a nice buck. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have taken anything just to come home with something. Anyway you probably get the point. The culmination of everything from the moment I knew I would be able to go to getting on the plane home made it what it was and will probably always be the best hunt of my life. Just like Fred Bear said... Thanks Youngfart!
Thanks JGD and great story! Sounds like an awesome experience I hope to have at some point in my hunting career.
Back at it in VT. Brassica plot is all tore up. Camera is showing does, 2 spikes, a 2.5 yr old 6 and a 3.5-4.5 7pt. Evening and night activity. As I was typing this, a yearling Doe came in. 30 yds. Let her walk.
looks like lots of success lately. Good to see! i've been away for a bit. after hurting my neck working on my deck I've had to pack the bow away for the season. I could probably draw it back but I don't want to strain anything. Im going through physical therapy right now and things are getting better everyday. Just takin it slow. I'm gonna root on the sidelines for now. Just a reminder to put all of the harvest info into the score card thread. get some does!
Not deer related, but god I love waterfowl hunting! Deer hunting will always be my number one, but waterfowl hunting is just so awesome and addicting! Had a pretty decent few days around these parts and its only going to get better, I have some High hopes for January as the cold weather keep moving in! Hen Bufflehead and 3 Drake Old Squaw Hen and Drake Buffies Hen Hooded Merganser, Black Duck, Mallard, & Brant Beaut of a Drake Hooded Merganser
Have to share these also because Snow Geese are not common around this area of NY. In fact I only know one old timer, who has been waterfowl hunting around here for about 40 plus years and he has only shot one so its a rare occurrence indeed. Well yesterday was just one of those days, SNOW GOOSE DOWN!
Hey guys sorry I've been away for a while. I'm still hunting when I can. Haven't had any mature bucks to hunt until this last week. I have a really big mature buck showing up every day about 20 min after legal shooting light. So I'll be waiting for a good cold front and see if I can catch him moving earlier. Good luck to those still hunting.
Hardwoods, good work on the waterfowl! Very nice indeed, and quite a mixed bag. Bear, I hope you connect with that buck, he looks like a dandy. Maybe a cold snap would get him coming out to eat a little earlier. Hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas!
Thanks JGD! Yea, for where I am we get some really great birds and have lots of varieties to hunt. Makes it that much more awesome! Bear, that's a great buck! Good luck with him and I hope he makes that one mistake you're looking for!
Hardwoods, congrats on all those beautiful birds. I grew up in Louisiana and it makes me miss duck hunting the swamps down south, but I'm happy to trade that for giant Ohio bucks lol. Thanks guys for all the good luck sent my way. Our season ends here Feb 5th so I only anticipate having 3-4 more hunts for this deer.
All done here. Might start looking for sheds the next couple weeks and maybe some small game while I'm out. I've seen this pitch black squirrel from my stand a couple times. Gonna call the taxidermist today to see what he gets for doing one. Christmas present to myself.
You can come here and kill as many black squirrels as you want, I see them all the time. But good luck with that one!
