Just got some good news over at ADF&G. The bear that was shot above my other stand was a 7 1/2 foot 3 year old boar with a rub. The 9 footer is still in there somewhere. I'll be back after him in a couple of hours!
Just sent some of my most potent mojo your way Rob. It'll wrap around the bear's neck right....about....NOW! Be on guard for a dazed looking 9 footer. You 'll know him when you see him. Put an arrow through him...you can thank me later!
Two and a half hours after I left last night who shows up under my stand but Big Mo! This bear is a monster. I think Will's MoJo bounced right off of him.
We had some fresh snow at about 04:00 this morning and my friend Don cut a track. He called me up and we got after him hoping to catch him napping or sneaking into his bed. You can see this stuff is pretty thick so if there's a shot, it's going to be up close and personal. We found where he had bedded for a while early this morning. When he got out of the bed he walked right under one of my stands... too bad one of us wasn't in it!!! We tracked him for a while but then he crossed a river and I had to get to work. Don carried on after him alone but the snow was starting to melt pretty fast by then. On my way out I cut tracks on an even bigger brute heading in the same direction. I hope Don doesn't become the filling in a bear sandwich!
That's an Easton Axis arrow, looks like it's right around 8" across. I couldn't imagine putting a stalk on something that size, just wow.
Yep, the wraps are 7". I figure for this year, if the track is wider than the wrap he's a shooter. I'm estimating the big bear on the trail cam pics is tipping the scales at about 900 lbs.
I can't imagine what a 900 pound bear looks like. I seriously cannot. Hunting them would be a real thrill ride I bet though. I hope one cooperates for you Rob. You sure are an impressive outdoorsman! Heck, I am hoping to get a crack at a 250# bear next year. That about makes me laugh in this thread.
Jim, Imagine a VW beetle that ripples when it walks. That'll put a good mental picture in your head... I saw my first brownie on Afognak Island (just north of Kodiak). I was so taken by the shear size. Had the bear attacked, I would have died. I was frozen in time watching the bohemoth. The bruin literally looked like a VW beetle walking. The fat on his body rippled like Jello with every step. Get him Rob!
Don sat my river tree the other night that I had the small bear come under me at without any sign but today should have been the day. I can't believe it didn't happen today! Don cut his string yesterday so I lent him my Z28 Snow bow for the morning hunt while I built him a new one, and I let him sit in my new treestand this morning since I had an eye doctor appt. I expected to get a call at any minute that he shot a new WR out of my stand with my new bow!!! Nada! I got in and we did some looking around later in the morning. The new Z28 got it's first taste of the great outdoors. We searched the entire drainage and found nothing but a small bear in the bottom end. We fear that the big boys may have bailed for better grounds at the first sign of snow. I think it's time to go mountain goat and deer hunting for a week and see how things look when we get back.
What has changed Rob? What has caused the bear to move? Is there a spicy hot dish down river? I hit em with mojo not disappearing fluid...
The salmon runs are weak all over and that's all they have to eat this time of year so they're basically just around until there's enough snow in the mountains for them to den up. We've been getting a lot of snow in the mountains lately. I saw a lot of droppings full of dead grass last week which tells me they're shutting down their digestion and getting ready to sleep the winter away.
Oooh eeh Rob , they are some Big Bears , Good luck , Take care and shoot straight ( which going off that day at Elk Camp , that should be no problem )
Hmmm...., Try Den mother garb for a day..."if you build it, they will come"" You might get a few strange looks around town, but hey, it's worth a try, right? LOL. My second thought would be to hang out where there's grass. It's just a little 'ol island. There can't be that much grass. You can watch it grow while waiting on the bear. My third thought is to push until the fat lady sings. The deer and goats aren't going underground. The gal is going to smack you around a tad, but you're a big boy. You can handle it. Kill the bear!
