Keep it coming Rob...love it! Did I hear you correct at Elk Camp, that a resident Bear tag is only $25? Too bad Alaska is just a bit far to have a "2nd residence" in...Will I think you're on to something. Good Luck!
I dream of hunting a Brownie some day. But I do hope you have a friend with atleast a .338 Ultra Mag backing you up if you are hunting them with a bow.
Yeah, you'll have to get in line behind Rex I think. First it'll be the bear, then a goat, then it'll be a sheep, nag nag nagging all the time... I know how it goes!
The local wildlife biologist wants me to shoot that one that was under me last night. He said it's been aggressive and causing problems with sport fishermen on the river. I told him if he issues me another tag I'd be glad to help out but I'm not going to spend 4 years waiting on another tag because I shot that guy. Jeeper Slick; 2 people is just too much scent wafting around. A sharp broadhead through the lungs kills them just as dead as anything else. My first only made it about 70 yards before he piled up. NOVA; I'm in Kodiak, just a stones throw from Homer... in Alaskan geography anyways. Finch, I know we say LOL a lot but damn if I didn't literally LOL at your post, Good Stuff!
I lived in Dillingham for three years, really miss it, of course at the time i was only 7 or 8 so my hunting experiences were limited to rabbit and spruce grouse, haha. My father made a trip to Kodiak for blacktails and got a 7X5 and 2 smaller bucks. I'd like to go back and get some serious hunting done one day.
nag nag nagging all the time... Maybe so, but i won't throw out all your clothes/possessions to make room for mine!
Ya, thanks Tony, you'll be watching for the funeral and Will will be watching for the rummage sale... I think he just wants a cheap in on my stuff, or at least half of it in the divorce! :D
Just hangin' with the Z28 tonight. And then it rained... nothing like spending a couple hours in a tree during 34 degree rain to make you appreciate a warm dry house! On a concerning note; the intel I have is that the larger bear in those trail cam pics is a skinned hide and carcass now. Sounds like some Coasties shot him at noon yesterday up above another one of my stand locations. They hadn't checked him in with ADF&G as of 11am today but I hope to hear for certain tomorrow. Now I need some snow on the ground to scout the drainage for another potential. Big Mo (the next archery WR) might show as other drainages dry up during the freeze... at least that's what I'm hoping. (Big Mo makes the larger bear in those pics look like a cub! He's no BS 2x's bigger!)
They can run full steam for 50 yards with no heart. The thoughts that he went 70 yards AWAY would make me feel incredibly lucky. I respect you for doing it the way you do, but I dont believe you are showing the world's greatest carnivore enough respect. I wish you well with it, and hope we don't read about you becoming lunch. A sharp broadhead through the lungs will kill them, yes. But a .375 bullet through a shoulder (something a bow CANT do), will stop them from coming after you. But, sorry to seem negative. You live there, and I dream of living there. I just feel bow hunting should be left to the plant eaters. I mean no disrespect though, so please don't take it as such.
No worries, none taken. I've just been bowhunting long enough and around them enough to know my capabilities and limitations and that their reputation is mostly just that; a few bad apples. They're very much like dogs and/or humans in their personality traits. It's the bad ones you've got to watch out for and you've got to know the signs to look for. If you cross the wrong one in the wrong circumstance there's just no such thing as too much gun but most of them just want to go about their day and avoid humans and confrontation at all costs. I'm no Timmie Treadwell and have no intention of ending up as such. Hence the .450 AK lever action in the truck for follow up. Oh, they're not even close to the world's greatest carnivore, on land anyways the polar bear has them beat hands down... they're on the bucket list though... even if it means the bucket!
fred bear killed em with recurves, i am sure rob can take care of himself! the man is an archery machine! Good luck dude, great pics!
Keep us updated, this is a great post. Where are your shooting lanes from that tree? looks like they may be somewhat limited from the picture view.
I've got one 20 and two 40 yard openings to the sand bar out in front of me and a nice 15 yard shot over my left shoulder behind me. There's a lot of branches to break up my silhouette but there's a lot of openings in them too.
