It is very common. Only thing about this deal with makes it out of the ordinary is that the dude is gay.

I'm not saying your wrong as I'm not a close follower of the NBA but who are these other serviceable bigs you speak of?

Collins is horrible. One of the worst bigs in the league. They did not sign him to win games. They probably signed him to have a full roster which they have to do. And if you're doing that, why not create some publicity in the mean time.

As unrestricted free agents perhaps dozens is a stretch (Lamar Odom and Drew Gooden both come to mind off the top of my head)... but easily attainable players in the NBA don't have to be free agents only. Heck call up Devin Ebanks from your own minor league team.

I'm not saying Collins is a BAD choice for their needs here, just that given the availability of other equal choices.. the timing of picking him up here does raise an eyebrow.

He is not as good as some others.... Which the Nets were probably looking for - Not as good = Not as much money.

I don't know... I just don't buy into the thought that they would sign a player because of his sexual orientation to get publicity. They are 26-28 on the year, nothing to brag about... I would think they would not like the attention.

NBA franchises depend on fan support for income. Any publicity is good publicity ESPECIALLY given their record. They aren't filling seats/selling jerseys/etc based on their level of play alone by any means haha

Collins has played for the Nets before and is a former teammate of Garnett, Pierce, Johnson, and coach Kidd. Those guys along with their best player Deron Williams were lobbying to pick him up to help win games. They need a Center (these 7 footers don't just grow on trees) to come in and contribute some minutes, grab a few boards, foul a few people, provide some beef in the interior, basically do what he has done for the past 12 years in the league. I doubt the players and coach of the team give a crap about publicity. They want to win games and are fighting for a playoff spot. That's why I think this entire thread is silly.

Sorry... I just don't buy this signing as being a publicity stunt.

    Exactly.

People make it a big deal when it's not. He should be recognized as a basketball player, not a GAY basketball player. He's like anyone else on the court.

It's disingenuous to say that the media are merely reporting on this matter. Merely reporting denotes a dispassion. They are clearly advocating a certain position. Also, it's important to talk about these topics. People who think that its a moot point, that their position doesn't require qualification, are (I personally believe) asking for more misunderstanding. These social topics require candid dialogue, not sensationalized group-think.
