Well, I took my best friend Jeff Choate and his co-worker, Brent Pease and son Karsten Pease black bear hunting. Jeff and Brent both coach football for Boise State University. Brent is the assistant Head Coach and receivers coach. Jeff is the Lb'rs coach and Special teams coordinator. These guys had a few free days in their schedule to come up and hunt blackies with me. Brent brought his boy Karsten whom just got his license 3 months ago.

We hunted my spot and stalk area the first evening and saw a beautiful color phase sow, big ole girl too, but she had a cub. No shooting sows with cubs here. Night 2, Jeff and I put Karsten and Brent on a bait I had put in and with in 1 hour Karsten had a big ole blacky show up. Bear was right around 400 lbs live weight, hanging meat was weighed at 225. Skull measurment came back today from my taxidermist ...green scored at 19 5/16ths.. 6foot6 hide. Really nice Idaho black bear!

We had a blast and most importantly a father son got to share a memory of a lifetime together.

Awesome job Shed. Very nice. Taking a big black bear is definitely on my list of things to do soon. I have had to cancel hunts in Alsaksa the last two years because of other family commitments. But, next year it may finally happen! Congrats on helping that young man take a heck of a bear.

That's a great story. I'm sure the youngster (as well as his Dad) was pretty excited. Was that the 1st critter he's ever taken?

Dang, that's a stud bear Troy!!

More importantly, I LOVE the message of your story of a father and son being together in the outdoors; we need WAY more of that these days.

And I love the first picture too where you guys are just laughing and having a good time together. I take a lot of pics for friends and especially of their kids, and I HATE it when the Mom (invariably) tries to "help" me out and say "Look at the camera and smile!"... Ugh! No! DON'T look at the camera!! And don't come up with this fake smile, either!!! :(

I mean, you've got to have those of course, but the best pics are always the natural ones when they don't even know you're shooting.

Congrats on treating a friend to an extraordinary experience!!

Thanks guys and to answer your questions. Yes it was Karstens first ever big game hunt/animal harvest. He just recently got his license and had duck and geese hunted only before this bear hunt. Not sure how wide those pads were Steve, but they were definately big. If you look at the Idaho state record books you will notice we only have a handful of 20 inch skulls ever entered so this 19+ is definately a bear of a lifetime for Idaho, and finally, yup these were the pix I was trying to send to you. :) Its funny, I get as much enjoyment out of helping out a friend than killing my own animals. Brent and Jeff have crazy busy schedules as D-1 football coaches, they definatley enjoyed the get-away in the mountains. Go Broncos, preseason top 5! They return 21 of 22 starters from last years Fiesta Bowl championship team. They open up with Virginia Tech! The guys did tell me, that I am on the family list for any tickets to any game including their bowl game. I am hoping they run the table this year and get a crack at the National Championship. !!!

Good job man! That bear is an absolute stud.

Boise State is going to be a force to be reckoned with this year, reyurning that many starters
