I am not a purest as far as mounts go, I have buddies who have had bucks mounted with string and branches stuck in their racks, because they were that way when they shot them..I shot a big 8pt a few years ago that had about 100" orange twine wraped around his antlers, I cut it all off.. I look at like this I don't want some trashy broke up rack on the wall.. I have had several racks repaired by my taxidermist , he does a great job and you can't even tell.
I almost think my answer depends on where I am hunting. My main hunting lands, I'm passing every time. But an out of state outfitter that I most likely won't be hunting again next year, I might be tempted to shoot if it was late in the trip. What was Hip Hop's thoughts on it?
It was a slow year! But the buck I shot was older than 5 1/2 for sure, planning on sending the teeth in to get a better idea.
If it's a deer I was hunting on my own farm and had history with I'd shoot. If I was traveling out of state, with an outfitter, etc. I'd pass.
begger's cant be choosers where I hunt... i'd take him... and keep the way he is. but that's just me being from around here... Other areas of the country may be a different story.... here 100" buck makes the wall
3 strikes and your out. He has the biggest head I have ever seen. We believe he is at least 6 but probably 7 years old.
I'd pass. Especially if you have pic's of him and he is something worth letting go. He could be a lot bigger next year.
I would shoot, no question. I have no idea why people only consider "mature" bucks or "shooter" bucks the ones with 10+ points. Age makes it mature, not antlers.
I passed a half rack 5 1/2 plus this year with my bow. Regreted it 5 minutes after I let him go. Do what makes you happy. I would have shot him had another opportunity presented it self.
I am sure he had to send them off to a studio to have them re-touched! They will be magazine print quality when you get to see them. Might even make the cover of some calendar again next year. :p
I do not have Internet down here and Pat took the pics so no calendar with this buck there was no retouching on the other pic Heckler the guy who took the pic takes I believe the best hero shots ever
