ok guys, I want to get new broadsheads, i really want to tru some G5s but not sure what ones to try im not a huge fan of mechanicals. What do you guys think? which ones fly the best and leave a good blood trail?
Any of them will do what you want......if your bow/arrow is tuned properly, and you do your job (shot placement). It really becomes a personal choice, based not-so-loosely on your equipment.
If you decide to go with G5's, I have some for sale. You could try theme and see if you like them for less money than buying a whole bunch of new ones. I also have some WASP SST Hammers if you would like to try those. Just a thought. G5's http://forums.bowhunting.com/showthread.php?t=11469 Wasp http://forums.bowhunting.com/showthread.php?t=11405 Good luck.
G5 just came out with a new version of the tekan called the T3 which has three rear deploying blades and a huge 1.5 in cutting diameter which I know will leave a blood trail you won't be able to miss. I have long been a Rage 3 blade shooter but after seeing these babies, I might just try em out, especially as they say you can shoot through mesh with em w-out worries. And they look sweet too.
If you want a TOUGH economical BH that will flat-out do the job, check out Slick Tricks!!! By far the BEST BH I've ever shot, as far as flight, durability, and getting the job done!!!
We've been shooting the Shuttle T's for several years and have had nothing but good experiences with them. There's a new BH coming soon from some Texas boys that look like they might be pretty cool as they have interchangeable blades on a single ferrule and several of the blades are reversible. www.hartcraftxchange.com
They don't make a 3 blade...... 4 blade only, std, magnum, razor trick, grizz-trick, they're all 4 blade BH's.
BTguy beat me to it...lol. I got to see the new T3 at the ATA and the look awesome. I currently use the stryker but I am using these this year.
I shoot the G5 Tekans and they performed flawlessly for me this past fall. I am gonna have to check out those T3 broadheads now as well.
The Slick Tricks fly like a field point, but I just didn't have any luck with them leaving blood trails.
Just find a BH you have confidence in. That is the most important thing. The mental aspect; because as Jeff said if you put the BH in the right spot they all will do the job.
Another consideration to take into concern is your actual hunting areas. Are they big pieces of land where a deer can run over a hundred to two hundred yards and expire and you not worry about someone else finding it or it running unto a different property you can not access? If so than a "micro"sized BH like the slick trick will perform flawlessly. These style heads are easy to tune, fly great at high speeds, and penetrate easily due to the smaller cutting diameter. If you're hunting smaller plots of land whether private or public, you need a BH that puts a deer down in extremely short order, of which BHs with a 1.5in. cut or bigger, will get the job done. Just finding a BH that you have confidence in is not enough, sure they will all kill a deer, but you also need to consider your hunting style, land size, and bow setup to achieve maximum results and expectations from your chosen head to tag an animal.
i use 3 blade 125 grain serated bh's , all carbpn steel and alloy , they have never ever ever failed me and only $25 aus for a pack of 3 woot just screw em on a good carbon fibre arrow with decent feathers on it an go for the shot .
most of the places I hunt are fairly small, If I hunt any thing big its public land. my biggest concern if feild point accuracy, however I dont like mechanicals just dont have faith in them i guess.
I've found that dinging the blade on a Montec pretty much destroys it. I switched to the Strikers so that if I ding one I can replace it. I've been real pleased with them. Both flew with great accuracy and perform well. Neither one tuned any better to the arrow than the other, they both took some trial and error to get them matched and balanced correctly but I find that to be the case with all broadheads. It's always an insert/arrow issue more than the heads.
Using my pic's again....sorry... This almost 5yrs old (and about 200# live wt) doe went 70yds...after a ST Magnum THWAACKED her... This is what the blood trail looked like toward the last 20yds.... This old herd matriarch went 50, stopped looked around for a few seconds, and fell over DEAD, look at the way the blood POURED out onto her front legs for those few seconds she stood there, this picture is "As I found her" BOTH dropped in sight, both had BH's slice their heart as well.....
Better than most, but in reality, most all bows need fine tuned a little bit to shoot BH's like FP's. Under calm conditions, all things being equal, many BH's are capable of FP like flight. If you take 45 minutes or so to fine tune your bow to get BH's to shoot with FP's, in the end, BOTH BH's and FP's will flight just a little better.
