So I'm literally sitting in my treestand. I just missed a mature doe at 35 yards, and some of it was nerves I'm sure because I haven't shot my now at a deer in three years. But some was confidence. In years past I had only practiced with broadheads, so I knew my shots were gonna be true. But this year I decided I was tired of destroying targets, and only shot my broadheads about ,5 times. What is a good target to use for broadheads, or what do you guys do about sighting in your broadheads? Sent from my H1611 using Tapatalk
My field points and broad heads shoot the same because my bow is tuned correctly. I shoot field points all summer and then shoot broad heads the last week before I hunt. I have a Rhinehart 18-1 for either head. I've shot broad heads into this target for 6 years and it is still in super good condition.
regrettably broadhead targets are pricey. Favorite target is the rhinehart 18-1. Shot mine so much the target was nearly shot in half so injected it with the liquid rubber in a can they advertise on TV and let it set up for a week. really tightened it up and think I'll get another season out of it. I did pick up a rhinehart woodland cube as a backup target because it was "only" a hundred bucks but don't care for it. its a very hard material and think it has to be hard on the arrows. I highly recommend the 18-1 but do not recommend the woodland cube.
Every single hunter is going to find a different BH that flies true for them but for me its a Muzzy trocar. Ive been using Rage hypodermics with success until a week ago I had a deflection from a twig that I think opened it in flight. That and the arrow hit a shoulder so I literally watched the biggest buck Ive ever shot at take a shoulder hit, arrow fall off of him, then he walked off through the brush. One dime of blood on the ground, a teeny bit on the rage and a broken hearted hunter in its wake. Buck didn't even bolt, just walked off basically. I came home, threw on some Muzzy's, and shot them side by side with my field points. Except for the damage on my target I could tell no difference. As stated above, a tuned bow will at least get you close.
I have a couple rhino block targets that work well with heavy use shooting broadheads. Elk Guide also just gave me a blob target and it's probably the best broadhead target I ever owned.....pay the money and buy a solid target and shoot often Sent from my SM-G950U1 using Tapatalk
I already shoot pretty much everyday. That's where the disappointment came from. But I believe you are right. Need to shoot with broadheads more Sent from my H1611 using Tapatalk
I have an 18-1 as well & it is going on 7 years old & is great shape. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You need to make sure your bow is tuned correctly to start with. I shoot a 18-1 target but they don’t last me as long as some others. I shoot pretty much all year. As for Fixed or Mechanical, I shoot both. I tune my bows to be able to shoot both. One bow has Rage Trypans with one G5 Montec & a Wac’em, another bow has Rage Xtreme & DRT 2 blade, my last bow has Solid broad heads & wac’ems. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I shoot the old school Muzzy 4 blade 100 gr and the NAP Killzone mechanical heads. Love them both and they shoot like...arrows are supposed to shoot. I reuse the Muzzy heads for practice then swap out the blades with new ones to hunt with. I use the Killzone practice heads.
I would recommend joining a broadhead league if you can. Great way to get your bow broadhead tuned. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Jchal3 - Bummer to hear about your miss. Regardless of the reason, it happens and is always disappointing when you practice and think you have it all right for a kill. Few questions I think you need to ask yourself. - Are you overreacting to broadhead practice? You shot 5 times. If they were hitting where you needed them to...no amount of practice in the world would change the point of impact. - You are likely right and most of it was nerves. Maybe you dropped your arm. Maybe you torqued the bow. Maybe you hit a branch. You and only you can diagnose what happened on that one shot. - Others have had great suggestions about targets for you. Nothing to add there.
I'm going to shoot some broadheads again tomorrow. Maybe that will shed some light. If nothing else it will bring the confidence back to hit the woods Sent from my H1611 using Tapatalk
Shot my broadheads this evening. They were grouping with the field tips up to 40 yards, then they started to stray. Little week of the rest, and it's good to go. I feel like the miss was definitely something I did, not the set up, but the confidence is back after shorting today. Ready for the woods this weekend. Sent from my H1611 using Tapatalk
