MN FNG here again- need to select broadheads for this weekend. Leaning towards mechanical. I'll be shooting a Hoyt Rampage XT, 27" draw, #55. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I just got my first deer Saturday with a muzzy 3 blade 100 grain fixed broadhead. The blades are trashed, but they are cheap to replace. Plus I got a 6 pack with a set of practice blades on eBay for the same price as a 3 pack of any brand mechanical. When I saw the same 6 pack in a store display it was only a few dollars more than online. I used a PSE stinger 3G at 55# & 27" as well and was clean through with him running at the most 20 yards before collapsing.
From what I have heard if your pulling anything under 70 lbs you want to use fixed blades and not mechanical
I'll state what I and everyone should when this question gets asked daily it seems: Every single broadhead has killed deer, is killing deer and will continue to kill deer for hunters. It's not a question if the broadhead is capable it's a question if the hunter is capable. :D Now I use Slick Trick Magnums (this year) and have for the most part been a fixed broadhead fan...but that's my personal opinion.
I use Grim Reapers, 1 3/8" Razorcut SS, really like these broad heads. As for the poundage statement, I would agree with leinen, if you are pulling back 55# you are fine to use an expandable, just be careful using the ones that make 2" cutting diameters, some of them clearly state you need a certain amount of kinetic energy for them to work properly. Good Luck!!
i shoot rage 2 blade but before i switched i used wasp boss 100 3 blade fixed. im thinking about tryong the NAP hell razors if these rage dont perform. im shotting 65 lbs so we will see
You really should have been practicing all summer long with the broadhead you will hunt with. It's pretty late to just be making a decision now. Mechanicals cause more problems than they are worth. Stick with a fixed head for best all around performance.
Thanks for the tips, gents. It's very helpful. I'm going with a Rage 2 blade 2" based on recommendation of the guy I'm hitting the woods with. "You really should have been practicing all summer long with the broadhead you will hunt with. It's pretty late to just be making a decision now. Mechanicals cause more problems than they are worth. Stick with a fixed head for best all around performance." Thanks for your input on mechanicals vs fixed. I just recently fell into a situation where many stars and planets aligned for me to take up bowhunting this fall, and I'm gonna take advantage of it as best as I can. I plan on shooting quite regularly during the off-season, with my eyes on fall 2013 to be a significantly better shot than I am now. Just gonna make the best of this year, eyes & ears open, mouth shut, enjoying it all the while. As for the condescending lecture, thank you Dr. Hindsight. If I wanted to listen to that I'd still be married.
F920 is a great encourager and provides a lot of solid advice... As do many hunters here... You just have to kind of sort through the available medicines without trying to take the whole pharmacy. I think what he meant was the basics will serve you well while you learn.
Nothing condescending about my comments at all. I gave you solid advice. A fixed head will serve you better. You can ignore it if you want, I have only been doing this for 32 years or so and have only killed a few more than a hundred big game animals with a bow. My advice is from experience, not some marketing firm. I only beg that you know your equipment and become very proficient with it before you head to the woods. A lot of rookies dont, and it reflects poorly on the sport we love.
