A friend and I had a debate at what distance to shoot broadheads on the practice range. I have been shooting mostly at 40 and 50 yards. He thinks I am nuts, so wanted to see what distance everyone else practices at. DISCLOSURE: THE VIEWS OF ELKHUNTINUT OF SHOOTING IN NO WAY ENCOURAGES YOU TO SHOOT AT A LIVE ANIMAL AT THESE RANGES.
i practice up to 40yds and will not take a shot in the woods farther than 30.... always 10yds more than i hunt!!!!!!!!
Why would he think you were nuts? 40 and 50 yard practice makes the shorter distances easier and it really shows exactly how well your broadheads are flying. When I went on my elk hunt, we practiced putting Muzzy's in the 12 ring of a McKenzie Elk target. Luckily my shot was 33 yards. :D
That is what made that 33 yard shot a chip shot....I look at it this way, good golfers just don't work on their short game, neither will I.
Like Rob said, makes the closer ones seem much easier while practicing at longer yardages. I started doing this last year (practicing at longer yardages). It's Improved my 20 to 25 yard shooting 100%. It still doesn't extend my max yardage though and most likely never will unless the animal Is wounded.
I shoot broadheads at least 10 yards further than I will ever shoot at an animal. We shoot broadheads at 60 or 70 yards. I don't really understand the stigma that people have about practicing with broadheads, especially at long ranges. I guess I'm not sure why there is any difference at all. Is it because we have to sharpen or replace the $10 blades? No offense to anyone, I just don't understand.
I've shot them at almost 60yds, but I don't practice at much beyond 55yds anymore, and I won't take a shot at an animal past 40yds.
I'll shoot mine up to 35 yards but don't feel comfortable past shooting a live animal over 30 yards. I would like to shoot them farther, but 35 yards is about the max I can shoot to in my back yard, safely.
Exactly what Rob said,,,if there is a chance ill take a 40 yard shot, i wanna know what they are doing at that distance before going out in the field. your not nuts!!!
I shoot out to 50 and have pins set for those distances, it helps to work out any form issues as well as seeing how your BHS group
I practice with broadheads as far out as I would take a shot in a hunting situation which is about 35 yards.
I shoot BH's out to 55 yds. The biggest reason is to make sure that they are flying like my FP's. I keep a BH in my practice bucket and will randomly stick it on an arrow and shoot it a bit.
