Well i just got my first bow and i've been spending a lot of time practicing already. I know i have a little while before i have to choose a broadhead to hunt with, but i've been reading about the different types and looking at reviews of tons of them. From what i've read it seems that fixed heads are most reliable but dont fly as close to field tips as mechanicals do. However i've read lots of mixed reviews about mechanicals not penitrating well. I am shooting a new Mission Venture at 55lbs with a 28.5" draw. So far i've made a short list of a few mechanical heads that seem like they perform pretty well more times than not. These are Spitfire, Grim Reaper, and Swhacker which is the old Sanora modified a little. I've read tons of bad stuff about some of the bigger names like Rage and Bloodrunner, so im on the fence about them even though lots of people swear by them. Any imput would be greatly appreciated. My only concern is at 55lbs draw weight a mechanical might not be the best option of me due to the penetration issues i've read about.

There's currently a couple of other active threads regarding this. Best to read them as well as doing a search for the topic too. A lot of great info already posted up. :)

well bloodrunners cant fail because they are a fixxed blade/mechanical
But for short draw and 55lbs id use a fixxed probably a cut on contact which i use now
Ive made the mistake 2 times of using a mechancial out of a 55lb bow which i hunted last year with so i switched to montecs from g5 and could tell a huge difference
muzzzy, slicktrick, montec, thunderheads, strikers, they all are good

Good advice. Just shoot what you makes you comfortable. I've shot both kinds and liked both. Currently I shoot 100 grain 2 blade bloodrunners. I hated the rage because of the o ring always breaking off. They did put huge holes in the deer and great blood trails tho. But the Bloodrunners do just as well. The blood is amazing!!! But with your lower weight I would shoot a fixed blade. I shot muzzy for a few years and really liked them.

I have used thunderheads for 20yrs. I thought they were the best on the market. My buddies and I started using Grim reapers this year. AMAZING! Instant blood trail,They shoot better then my field tips. I know, I didn"t believe it either. No problem at 60#. I don't think you would have any trouble at 55

Fixed blades have no moving parts. Thus with a properly tuned bow 99.9 % of the time won't fail.
