This season will be my third season I have been out, but have yet to tag a deer and was wondering:

I was wondering how do you guys get your deer home or to the processor from the field?

I put'em in the back of the truck and take em to the shop.

If its over night I will buy some bags of Ice and leave it in the chest of the deer. Most of the time we cut'em up back at the house and start the grill that night

I usually drag them straight from the field to the processor. Sometimes, depending on where I'm sitting, it can be quite a lengthy drag. Usually it about 4 or 5 miles. It not only keeps me in shape but also saves on skinning. Remember to flip the deer regularly in intervals.

    Good luck.

That totally ruined the image I have always had of you riding the Harley with a deer on the back seat. Why did I always think that is how you used to get those monsters home?

I had purchased one of those trailer hitch attachements for my SUV, for camping, but figured since it is rated to hold over 500 lbs. I could put the deer on that and then drive to the processor. I would be driving on the highway to get there, which is why I asked, since I don't want to ruin the meat and cause any problems on the road.

Don't forget to field dress immediately. If it's warm it goes to the shop. If it's cold I like to skin it right away after getting home and let it hang for a couple days. Then butcher at home.

The hitch-haulers work great for transporting deer. A good idea would be to wrap it in a tarp. You don't want the meat(assuming it's field-dressed) to be exposed to road grime, exhaust, etc.
