FYI, players didn't want to hear the truth. They have no problem getting 2nd 3rd or 10th opinions if they do not like what they are being told as long as it gets them on the field. NFL didn't do concussion research, the medical community did and what they found was there for anybody to see. the Players blaming the NFL is BS and nothing but a way to get a bigger slice of the pie. Sick of hearing players like Mark Schlereth complain about the 20+ surgeries he had and blaming the NFL and calling them greedy. News flash, the only person who made him have all those surgeries is himself and the reason he did it is because he wanted to get back on the field so he could earn more money, GREED. Friggin hypocrite.
"NFL didn't do concussion research" NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue creates the Mild Traumatic Brain Injury committee Rheumatologist Dr. Elliot Pellman was put in charge http://thejns.org/doi/abs/10.3171/[email protected] Above is their study and published in Journal of Neurosurgery Here's the title Concussion in professional football Summary of the research conducted by the National Football League's Committee on Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
Not really what I would call Concussion research, they were looking at it to develop better equipment. The players are acting as if the NFL hid all the medical information about concussions and the fact is that everything the medical community knew about concussions was readily available to the players if they wanted to know only need to look at Aikman to see that.
Read it and then watch league in denial. They actually put in writing it's okay for youth players to go back into a game after a concussion, so this is why they got sued. And yes they tried to hide it from players and public.
The problem is the idea that it was the NFLs job or place to be the entity responsible for educating the world on concussions. Everything the NFL new about concussions was readily available through the medical world for anybody who wanted to know. I have no love for the league, they are a business and their job is to make money. I really don't care if they get a bigger percentage or of the players get more. Either way doesn't change a damn thing for me or any other fan. Should the NFL have done more, fine sure. But what I think is asinine is the players acting like they are victims, that they wanted to know or couldn't know and that it is all the leagues fault. The only reason the players give a crap is because it is away for them to get more money out of the deal. Even today knowing what they do, the players would still want to go back in the game and play if they were allowed. Having to make rules to protect the players from themselves because if the league doesn't the players will sue them is asinine.
if it's educated informed parent would let them play prior to 20 years ago. NFL is the one who got involved in concussion study and lied to the players and public, NFL made their bed. As for players, if you still play today, you know the risk and should accept the consequences
So I guess the NFL paid off the entire medical community that actually have the doctors and scientists that did the scientific medical research and knew all the information. Blaming the NFL is a copout and money grab nothing more.
No, they tried to discredited them. Talk to the Doctor who discovered CTE and ask him what the NFL tried to do. Have you watch League in Denial? If not, it's a really interesting to see what the NFL tried to do, which is why they got sued.

Thanks for sharing this, it's what I thought since I first started to learn about CTE. Heads-Up football and other "safe" ways to play football are complete BS. I will talking with my son and daughter about soccer also.
I used to scoff at football brain damage as a coach who prided himself on proper tackling, I was a two term president of the local youth football board and was proud of the program. Today I was inline at the grocery store behind a parent of a kid I used to coach, the kid was highly intelligent but a **** head on the field. He was aggressive and was out at least twice with head injuries in the 5 years I coached him. He ended up being a div 2 kicker. I learned today the young man had an embolism brain injury had surgery and requires more surgeries. I feel like I watched him on two occasions injure himself that lead to where he is at. My mind is changed I would not coach football again.
Sota we had a young man around here who had no external mental health issues. He gets a massive concussion in a football game and within a week he killed himself. Parents donated his brain and when they looked at it, it was riddled with degeneration due to the shock he had absorbed through his years playing football. I played the game for 17 yrs. Who the hell knows what my brain looks like or what I may endure as I continue to age. I pray nothing. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
I played too chased it to juco football and gutted it out many times, so stupid so glad my son just wanted to get a degree and not play.
Glad I only have 3 fingers pointed in weird directions not sure about the brain damage I know I have had at least 6 times I have been knocked out and a another few times where I was just dinged. Still the idea of a young man I coached permanently damaged will haunt me probably because he was the same age as my son who is graduating college with a future ahead of him.
I read an article the other day on concussions and brain damage. The Dr, a brain surgeon who has studied these type injuries for several years said that it is not always the blow to the head or head to ground contact that does the major damage. Once any damage occurs, any jolt or hit to the body can increase that injury if not completely healed. It is not known yet how long it takes to completely heal a brain from various concussions. From this it sounds like any sports player that suffers even a mild concussion my want to sit out for an extended period of time before returning to play. The question is - how long. Kind of a scary situation.
My son is a little guy so I am glad he plays basketball and soccer. He may not have much of a sports future but he will be able to play those sports for the rest of his life and be happy. Tough guys and gals come in all sizes and shapes, regardless of sports accolades. The parents at the sporting events I attend are out of control. About 80% of them need an A whooping for being so rotten to the coaches, refs, players, and their own kid. It is sickening. Hopefully my son will enjoy fishing and the outdoors as he gets older and worries less about a game.
So today I am still emotional I can't get over the fact the kids life will never be the same and he is 21 whole life ahead of him and he will likely be forever damaged. Looking back at it thinking of the young man I spent hours with every fall for 5 years and watched him play after that. He was only allowed to kick in high school and the coach would not let him go down field after he kicked, he had that many documented concusions in high school. I can't get over the fact that I coached him and watched him damage himself. I took head injuries seriously as a coach I took the training and never pushed any injured player to either keep playing injured or rushed a kid back, still it happened. I don't think I will be able to watch any football game and not think of that kid when I watch a bone crushing hit. I'm done.
