looks like my season may be over even before it starts .... this is kinda long, Ive had BPH for years, 15+ (Benign Prostate Hyperplasia) .. aka enlarged prostate and been seeing a urologist since diagnoses ... Medication worked until is dosnt, Flowmax and Finesteride .... I also see a general family doc ..
On Sun. July 20 I went to the ER at 1 am, sweating profusely, pain in chest, numb right arm and I was FREEZING/shivering and pouring sweat like crazy ! .. they hooked me to a ECG and put me thru a CRT scan .. pumped me full of liquids, drew blood and more blood and more blood ... luckily the ECG was good/heart good, but they did find something I will have to see a cardio doc for (thats another story)...
I was super dehydrated from all my running, plugged bowels for a bit (all fine now) and came down with a super bad UTI, I was given meds for it, missed work that week ...

the early AM of Aug. 9th, woke up with extreme pain, right back kidney area, could not piss and it was backing up (still taking the BPH meds)..... called my sis to meet me at the ER and in I went again .... and a catheter was put in to drain the bladder (4th time thru the years) given IV anti-biotics/fluids and fentanyl for the pain and I'm taking Keflex as the anti-biotic now till gone plus the catheter and piss bag .. Ive got a kidney test coming up the end of this month and Cystoscope in Sept .... odds are if the meds no longer work, surgery is the only option (TURP or Laser) to open up the prostate .. I can not hunt/walk far, cant climb to hang, cant drag out/cart a deer out, BUT I can still shoot the bow/shot some today in the house and still mow the yard.... if/when surgery comes doc says 1-2 day in hospital/4-6 weeks recovery at least, my 2 weeks of vacation will be used up for recovery time .. hopefully back to work after the first 2 weeks ....
so, if anyone here has went thru the surgery, how was the outcome and how long for recovery ... and how was it years later ...I know what my docs says, but would like to hear from others .. BTW, I'm 67

this is what was drained from me on the 9th ...

here I was putting out my first cell cam on Fri. Aug. 18th, BBQ'd that night/felt great .. did oil change/took step bars off the next morning, was going to do a tire rotation but didnt have it in me.. went in the house, and threw up 3 times thru the day/night before going downhill and to the ER ..... it came on fast ...

Guys, if YOU have any hint of BPH, no matter your age, get your ass to a urologist, it will not get better, only worse and that is a fact .. at least get on the meds and yes, beer/ alcohol will make things worse, much worse which is why I quit alcohol and sodas 15+ yrs back ....

I'm very sorry you're having to deal with all this. Hopefully they can get it resolved without having to do a whole lot of invasive things. I'll be praying for you.

Sorry to hear. Some of the sickest patients I have taken care of have had Urosepsis from obstruction. Most of the time it’s from stones. Most TURP patients will stay overnight but go home the next morning assuming there no bleeding issues/clots.

I think once the initial recovery is over you will be happy and probably wish you did it sooner. Some patient may still have some bladder dysfunction after the procedure but those questions are best answered by your Doc who knows you.

This is a very common procedure so I’m sure someone will have some experience with it. Good luck, I’m sure you’ll do great. I know you are very active and taken care of yourself. That will certainly help during your recovery.

right now, I miss my running ( 48 yrs of it ) and was looking forward to a good deer season ...... at least with the catheter/piss bag(s) I can work, go to store, shoot the bow, wash the truck, however heavy lifting is out ... I guess I could 'prolly walk around the park down the street, like the rest of the old fogies do every AM .. ;0) .... at first thought, a 'stone'(s) could have been a problem, with all the protein I eat, protein mix, meats, tea, milk, spinach, etc. it can all contribute to a increase in oxalates which form the stones .... if so, it passed and I didnt know, I'll see after the kidney function test next week ... I'm drinking water like a horse to keep all flushed out, I actually feel fine, if it wasnt for this catheter in my yoohoo .... :0( ... at least I can watch at deer at work and from the cell trail cam pics ..

I had "turp" done about 15 yrs ago. Recovery was quick, It lasted about 10 yrs and I had to go in again. This time I had a "uro lift" done. They put 4 stainless steel pins in my prostrate, which done very little for me. I will probably need to have something done within a year, and they will need to remove the pins and do lazer .

Guys, there is another procedure that is supposed to be a bit less invasive and easier on the patient. It is called HoLEP. I won't try to explain it because I'm not qualified, but maybe @Westfinger will chime in and describe it better than I can

Ive read about this procedure .... this is a good article on it ... I go in next Monday for the kidney test/CRT ... then the Cystoscope wont be till Mid Sept. (this is the one I dread ) .... decisions will be made after that ... IF surgery is required, it wont be till after that (imo, sooner the better).. (I dont think there isnt a choice but surgery now, I'll see) ... the question is what the doc wants and thinks is better for me ... been with this urologist from the start, 15+ yrs ...

I'm holding out hope for maybe late season hunts ... shot about 30 arrows yesterday at 20 yds, still need to finalize my BH tune ...

I can’t add anything about the HoLep. I haven’t heard anything good about the UroLift.
