Looking for a new challenge this summer after schools out. Has anybody been successful at hunting groundhogs with a bow. If so any pointers.
It's very challenging but very fun! In my area we have a few trees, so I use those to my advantage. Spot the dog, get the tree between us and get as close as possible. They detect movement like crazy so you have to be as still as possible when you draw. Often times too, after they spook they might only poke there head out for a few minutes when they re-surface. Be paitent, eventaully they will come out and offer a good shot. I started using just field tip or screw in blunts for them, judos make a mess of them and are loud in flight. With the blunt you can actually see the gopher though. The field tips they take off down there hole. good luck!
I tried shooting one I saw in New York. Couldn't get it with a bow so I got a .243 and sat about 100yrds away. Then blasted him. They are tricky.
I've shot a couple with old broad heads, they usually get a pass through and make it back to the hole. Them whistle pigs get pretty big around here.
It's a blast. I hunt ditches, hedge rows, and rail road track ditches. I try to keep my sun to my back and I'll either try to stalk them or just setup for an ambush. One little trick that has worked well for me in wide open fields is to wait for the chuck to stand up and look at me, Then I'll run right at him chasing him back down the hole. I'll then sit on the ground 15-20 yards from the hole, on the back side from where I ran at him from. Most times when he comes back out the hole he'll be looking in the direct that you ran at him from. When he does this he gets a broadhead right in the back of the head.:D I use elchepo mechanicals and they work great.
