I hope folks don't take offense at my...inquisitiveness, but it seems to me there are some extremely obvious points being missed here. In Genesis 16 we see polygamy being practices with, if not approval, at least the sanction of God. I have often wondered how this is rationalized by Christians. Any comments would be appreciated.
I can't speak for all the other Christians out there, but I never really put much stock into it. It's there and now that you have pointed it out it's obvious. I think that it happened in Genesis because back then, a son was your legacy. It was how your family lived on (it still is). I think that Abraham was impatient and didn't trust God to give him a son, so Sarah gave him Hagar to provide that. I think God's disapproval is shown in verse 12: "This son of yours will be a wild man, as untamed as a wild donkey! He will raise his fist against everyone, and everyone will be against him. Yes, he will live in open hostility against all his relatives.”.
