Its about due time for me to replace the string on my Admiral before spring. I am going to order a custom bow string. I used to always get custom strings from Jesse Broadwater(Hoyt Pro Staff) but it seems he is not able to build strings anymore? I am in the process of ordering a press, as good shops are hard to come by and I am doing all my work myself anyhow. I just had a few questions....... 1. What are some of the differences in the different string brands/types(Ex:Brownell,Bcy..?) 2. Any reccomended string makers? 3. How do I measure to get the correct length, or should I just go off of factory specs? 4. Is there a reccomended number of strands to go by? I am assuming this all plays in what type of material it is? 5. Any other INFO is appreciated!!!! I am sorry for asking such "dumb" questions, but this is something i have never had to worry about. I just figure it wont hurt to learn as much as I can before it's time to replace the string! Thanks
Sorry meant to put this in the Tech section...! If whoever needs to take care of that feels like doing it please do!!
Here is some good string info: http://www.bcyfibers.com/Questions.html Here is a MD fellow that makes excellent strings. http://www.hinkystrings.net/
If you want a good set of strings, I highly recommend doing business with a company such as Vaportrail, Winners Choice, etc. They've been doing it a long time and know their stuff. That said, all you need to do is get the lengths of the string and cables off the sticker on the bow, or, if you can't read it, call the bow company to get the correct lengths. You want to get your bow back to factory spec. The set thats on your bow now likely has stretched some and your bow is probably out of factory spec now. The above manufacturers usually have your measurements on hand and if you tell them the year and model of your bow, can get the correct measurements for you and build them.
I have used and Sold lots of different Strings in the past. Nothing but VaporTrail for me any more. I usually am running some kind of a special on Vapor Trails. Dan
You can still get a string made by jesse! he does not have the shop anymore but his brother (jason) has a shop in garrett county outside of oakland. this is where i get all of my work done now since the shop in finzel closed down. jesse was making strings for his brother, i will be getting one very soon myself. it is a great little shop, good prices, and a super nice guy. give them a call at 301-387-2207 or mail at [email protected].
Yeah I have got my string through jason once before.(Along with numerous other things, great guy and great service) He sent out the information to Jesse and he tied it up and shipped it to me. I tried last year along with my brother to get a string but Hoyt had Jesse so busy that they said he didnt have time to get one done. I could try again......however now I am a good 1 1/2hr drive to the new shop since I moved. This was the only shop I would trust with my gear, and since they are so far away now that is why I am trying to do it all on my own. Thanks for the help though!!
no problem man, and hour and a half is a long ways to go... last time i was out to see jason he said jesse was so busy he did nothing but travel... i try to follow jesse throughout the year, he was a very good friend of mine through school. its awesome to see him doing so well and being able to say he is a great friend of mine.... another string you might want to check into is a HINKY string. the guys at marylandwhitetail.com claim they rock. the maker of them is a champion archer as well.... good luck!
Lots of good technical info here: http://www.brownellarchery.com/products.htm Brownell and BCY both make similar high quality products. One's really no better than the other. Most string makers are using BCY 452X. I found that it doesn't hold up well to the abrasion that the vegetation here dishes out from hiking through tall grass and brush. I'm building all my strings out of Brownell UltraCam now because of this. I would like to try some of the new BCY Trophy (452X with Gore for abrasion resistance) or the Brownell AstroFlight but the darn stuff is just too expensive to "play" with.
