    Hello.

New Here, in fact this is my first post. I am in the UK and new to archery despite having owned bows since 1998, but not really been a keen archer due to shooting and fishing taking most of my time. This year, due to interest shown by my wife, both of us have got into archery, so far target archery as we learn basic skills and strive to become a little more proficient.

I would like to branch into 3 D archery as it is the nearest thing to bow hunting we have in the UK. I have a bow that is very useable for this but my sight. Effective as it was in 1998 no longer agrees with my deteriorating eyesight leading me to mount a search for something more modern that doesn’t break the bank cost wise and, crucially is available left handed.

So far two I have identified that we can get here in the UK are the Spot Hogg Grinder in 5 pin format with micro adjust and the Black Gold Ascent Verdict, also in 5 pin, cost here for either in the region of £200 pounds, so pretty similar.

I don’t want to end up with something I can’t use but both of these look suitable for my use which I imagine will be at ranges from 15 yards to 60 or so.

My question is are there any differences between the two and is there one to be preferred over the other or is it a case of ‘an apple v an orange.’?

Any thoughts or help greatly received.

    Thank you

    Jonathan

Welcome to the sport and the forum. As for your question it's all opinion. Mine personally (as a hunter) I like the single vert pin. It allows my sight view to be less cluttered. Good luck and let us know how it turns out

Thank you for your reply, I hadn’t thought of a single pin but having now looked at them I think it may be an idea. My eyes simply struggle with a gang of 5 pins and merge into one. Others on here seem to say the same and they are out with a bow far more than me.

I have two sights in consideration which appear reasonably priced in the UK where we have to pay 20% tax and import duty on US made goods these are the Black Gold Verdict Ascent in single pin and the Apex Grear Covert Pro which seems to use LED technology rather than a traditional pin.

A bit of an apple-v- orange choice but both seem like they would be perfect for my need, both in the region of £200 here in UK, I am liking the Black Gold as they seem more rugged and engineered to me but I have not seen a Covert Pro up close and other views may be available, at the end of the day I want to buy once and buy right and we do not have the full range of sight choices you enjoy in the USA.

I assume they both work on a pre-set distance tape which I have not used before and which may take a bit of setting up so I may need to seek help on doing this. Only downside to the BG Ascent, delivery times via UK importer are rather long at 12-20 weeks but may have to live with that.

    What sight do you prefer.

    Many thanks

    Jonathan

A single pin is a very nice sight picture after being used to a 5 pin fixed. Very nice for 3d shoots, you can dial your pin to exact yardage, no having to gap pins.
Spot Hogg makes one with a double pin option, such as a Fast Eddie Double pin, it is one single vertical pin that has two fiber optic references. For most, if the top pin is set for 20 yards, the lower reference ends up being on around 38 yards. The bottom pin is not adjustable, but the sight tape has two needles so whatever you dial the top pin for, the second needle indicator will show you what the lower reference is at.

Black/Gold makes one similar to that, called a Dual Trac, but on it the bottom reference has a bit of adjustment because it is on its own arm. Still just looks like one single vertical post in your sight picture though.

Spot Hogg makes a 3 pin vertical too, called a Triple Stack, it has been very popular since it came out.
Spot Hoggs are fairly spendy, but they are a very robust and quality sight. Probably one of the most robust sights out there.

HHA has some nice options too, usually for less than a Spot Hogg or Black/Gold will run you, but they make a quality sight as well. I am still using an older HHA Optimizer Lite on my 3d bow, I like it a lot. It is old enough that it didn't have any 2nd or 3rd axix adjustment, but they make an add on piece for it that converts it to have those adjustments, very worthwhile if you buy an older Optimizer lite used or something.
I have no experience with Apex sights so can't really speak on that, but I've read many people say they make a good sight as well.

Mod I have been looking into either the hha optimizer ultra or the redline RL1 both single pin. How do you like the hha? And Jonathan I also feel the sight is too cluttered with multiple pins but I do like the single stack with multiple pins, that doesn’t seem too cluttered now that I saw that trophy ridge sight above. They have many options of single pin slider sights out there, if u do not like cluttered sights. I definitely recommend checking out those options also

I left a comment in your other thread, didn't want to hijack the OP's thread.

    Fix.

Thank you, liking the idea of single pin, my present sight has 5 side mounted pins but my ever changing eye prescription makes the pins appear as one, wearing glasses doesn’t help either as then I can’t see the target, no cure for age I am afraid but a single pin sight will certainly help.

Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions

Thank you for your post and thoughts. I like the look of the Black Gold sights, although we don’t seem to have a large range of availability in the UK, Spot Hogg seem more so but a bit pricey on the high end models, haven’t seen HHA but will see what is available here. Single pin looking like a real solution for my needs.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

    Many thanks
