The season is close just interested in what other hunters use for equipment like broadheads, poundage of bow, blinds anything just want to see what you guys use
I use a Doublebull pop up bilnd, my deer hunting set up which is a '97 High Country Max Force set at 66 lbs and shoots 2413 XX78's with a 85 gr Wasp SST hammer, 3-blade @275 FPS. I usually use a two hen and one jake deke set up. I call with a slate call, box call and a gobble call. I'm starting to get pretty excited myself! My season in Wi is from 4/28 - 5/2. I have pics of some pretty nice toms on my land.
Didn't remember you being a big turkey hunter, Greg? Good luck chasin' 'em with the bow and looking forward to the pics!
I'll be out of my Matrix ground blind, using my Maxxis 35 on 62 lb's and punching them with the old Gold Tip Gladiator broadhead.
It is looking like I will skip Turkey season this year. Last year I used my Double Bull Dark Horse, and Grizz Tricks on my arrow regardless of the setup. I killed an Eastern with a Carnivore 31, a Rio with a BowTech Sentinel, and Tagged my Merriam courtesy of a Carnivore 34. Dan
I'm always experimenting, but my rule is to "prevent" pass throughs. This year is 130-140gr steel force talons with my 48# recurve.
Probably my Marquis @ 60#, shooting A/C/C 3-49s and 100gr Slick Tricks. Essentially my setup for deer season. Different bow, same arrow setup. Definitely no blind this season whether I take the shotgun or bow.
I'll be in a Predator Den Blind, rocking a D340 backed out to 59ish pounds. I will be shooting Victory VForce 1 arrows with some leftover Rage 2 Blade BHs. Probably push 275-280 fps or something like that.
I'm lucky to live in a state with a long archery season and liberal bag limits. I killed my first 10-12 birds with NAP Gobblergetters, a broadhead designed to inhibit penetration. Drawing 70# @ 30" I don't recall ever getting a complete pass through with that setup. There were a couple of times I did hit birds perfectly and my broadhead failed to punch through the "breast plate". These birds died quickly, but both times I wondered about the lack of penetration. Because of these incidents I went to a Rocket Hammerhead. This head features a 2" cut and a chisel type head. I did get a lot of pass throughs with these, but IMO keeping your arrow in the bird does nothing to improve your odds of recovery. I think a turkey shot through the heavy part of the wing bone is a lot more thick-skinned than people give it credit for. The only advantage I see to turning down your bow for turkeys is your ability to hold at full draw longer. Last year I made the switch to Magnus Bullheads. These heads may require a couple of minor changes to your arrow setup, but the excitement level they added to my hunts made the switch well worth it. No matter what your arrows are tipped with, shot placement is always the key. Best of luck to everyone this spring!
so i have my bow set up at 60 pounds and im using muzzy 100 grain 3 blade broad heads that should be ok?( first time bow hunting turkeys dont want a bad first experience)
I'll be taking my Big River Longbow, 52# @ 28", CX Heritage 150's tipped with a 150 grain Snuffer! No blind! The decoy set up will change between a few Hens and B-Mobile! I'll see how that goes and them maybe switch up to a lone Hen, 3 Hens or a Jake and a Hen or even B-Mobile with a Hen! I'm hoping to get an extra tag and kill one with the my Fathers 1964 Remington 1100 12 guage, just a beauty of a shotgun!!!!
You and Jeff have my utmost respect for hunting these birds with traditional equipment AND no blinds! Heck, in my experience even the thought of "hey, there's turkey" causes them to bolt when I see them deer hunting. Bets of luck to the both of you and I really hope yall get one!
